The artists were usually poor people who wrote about their problems. Many different artist would go to coffee shops and perform to each other. At the end of the songs people would pass a hat and put any change they had in their pockets. People liked folk music and hated pop related music. Anything that was different they did not like at all. They thought folk music had a meaning to every song. To them pop music wasn't meaningful. In 1965 there was a festival called  Newport Folk Festival. That's when Bob Dylan saw an opportunity to show folkies a different kind of folk music. The people who were working at the festival didn't know what he was going to do, no one knew. Bob Dylan brought a whole set to the stage and starting to set it up. He used bass, drums, and guitar. During his performance he was booed. The Byrds and Dylan showed people that folk music can be different. Many problems around the world were going on so musicians came out with songs that in the lyrics talked about problems. For example, Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young came out with a song called Ohio. It was about the shooting in 1971. Another band that followed into their footsteps was The Mamas and Papas.
