Thomas Becket was appointed Archbishop in 1162 after King Henry II wanted to take control of the church. After a while Becket became very religious and took the side of the church. Henry was annoyed by this and Becket fled to France for his safety. They cooled things off and became friends again so Becket returned to England. Becket continued as normal which infuriated Henry. When Henry thought he was alone he said to himself “Someone rid me of this troublesome priest.” Some knights who had been listening set off to find and kill the Archbishop of Canterbury. When they arrived the monks tried to barricade all of the doors. However Becket said the holy place of worship should not be made into a fortress. Becket did not try to escape or protect himself, the knights killed him brutally and his head was chopped off. Henry was furious and killed the knights.

The anarchy was the name for the civil war that lasted 19 years from 1135 - 1154 which was the reign of King Stephen of England. It was between England and Normandy. In 1120, Henry I’s only biological son and heir, William Adelin, was killed when his ship sank in the English Channel. Scared the bloodline would end, Henry married Adeliza of Louvain in 1121 with the hope of having another male heir – though he had other sons, none were biological.
