In Effia's chapter, Baaba instructed Effia to stay silent regarding her womanhood or else consequences would arise: "It was Baaba who practiced silence and preferred the same from Effia, Baaba who had slapped her for asking why she did not take her to be blessed as all the other mothers did for their daughters. It was only when Effia didn’t speak or question, when she made herself small, that she could feel Baaba’s love, or something like it" (8). Effia is obliged to live a silenced and captive life by her mother, Baaba, where she is only able to speak when instructed or permitted to. Baaba forcefully instructed Effia to do things like hide her first blood so that she would not be able to marry a man of such high status like Abeeku, who was the next leader of the village. Moreover, she didn't want to be known as the "mother" of a child who wasn't hers and one that had a higher authority than her because she was the wife of the commander for the Fante’s. Instead, she had convinced Cobbe that the reason Effia did not get her blood was because of the blazing fire that cursed her on the day she was born. She explained that the most optimal situation was for her to marry a white, British man from Cape Coast Castle, as no one from the village is going to want a wife who cannot bear children of their own. Because of this, Effia’s lips were silenced. She was forced into the life chosen for her because of the hatred imposed by her mother. Although she could talk and her lips moved with every syllable, none of her words were listened to, and none of her actions were done on her own merit. All her life, she followed the role set for her since birth, which was to be silent and never speak or have an opinion on anything, as there would be severe punishment for her actions. In a way, the timer starts moving, and her lips are closed. As the time runs down, the intensity builds and the lies accumulate. When the time hits zero, the loud ring of the alarm is deafening. Baabas voice is stern and shocking; it is as though the sound jumps right out at you. Her lips are moving, and the only words coming out of her mouth are lies. It is like an alarm clock ticking down. The lies continue spilling out, but no destruction is made directly; nothing is confronted or admitted out loud. When the loud alarm rings, Baabas' loud voice runs. For example, in Quey's chapter, he met a friend named Cudjo, who didn’t acknowledge Quey to be black like him, despite Quey being of mixed race: "‘Are you white?’ Cudjo had asked him, touching his hair. Quey recoiled at Cudjo’s touch, though many others had done the same thing, asked him the same question. ‘I’m not white,’ he said softly. [...] ‘So you’re not white. What are you?’ ‘I’m like you,’ Quey said. [...] Cudjo held his hand out and demanded that Quey do the same, until they were standing arm to arm, skin touching skin. ‘Not like me,’ Cudjo said" (55). Quey feels like an outsider in this world. Having to live a life with two completely different identities, not feeling as though he fits in either one. Quey battles with trying to conform with society because no one from either side of his family wants to claim him; he is neither seen as fully "white" or fully "black". Quey’s feeling of not being accepted because of his skin colour causes an emotional detachment from both sides of his family. This can be shown when people perceive him as part "slave" and part "colonizer". When Quey meets Cudjo, the first question he is asked is if he is "white". Quey perceives this as an insult and therefore snaps back at Cudjo, explaining that he isn't white and is just like him. Cudjo replies saying, "Not like me" (55), implying that he is not black and is not of any part African descent but a colonizer just like his father. Because of this, Quey’s separation is represented by a movable bridge because both his parents, Effia and James, are of a completely different race. One hand holding another symbolizes the state of the bridge that allows cars to pass. It represents how the lineage can establish a connection between two separate cultures, traditions, and values. This continues until someone like Cudjo turns him down, who explains that although his mother is African, Quey is not similar to him, nor is he claimed to be Fante. The disconnection of identity occurs when the bridge separates into unconnected parts to allow for the passage of the boats, which symbolizes the withdrawal of connection between the two hands. When being questioned about his race, Quey began to notice how the hands of his mother and father, which were once connected, had broken apart. He is confused about how to respond, because he wants to fit in with the rest of the crowd. In a way, Quey is looked at differently depending on who he interacts with. He feels like being in the middle of both sides causes him to take the degrading comments made about him to heart. When the moveable bridge separates into two pieces, Quey doesn’t have a way to pass to the other side; he has to conform to the values of what others say about him in order to feel welcomed or even appreciated like a human. In conclusion, the idea of how a movable bridge represents two hands holding together can be depicted differently through each chapter of Effias lineage.            A lock and key as their hearts represent the variations in relationship compatibility between couples in Effias lineage. For example, James, who was the child of Quey and Nana Yaa, was told to marry a girl named Amma Atta, even though he found her to be really annoying and obnoxious: "‘Nana Yaa and I have chosen a nice wife for him to marry when the time comes,’ Quey said. [...] Before his great-uncle Fiifi had died, when James was still just a small boy, Fiifi had conspired with Quey to choose the woman whom James would marry. She was called Amma Atta, the daughter of Chief Abeeku Badu’s successor to the stool. Their joining would be the last thing on the list of rectifications that Fiifi had promised himself he would fulfill for Quey" (92). James feels annoyed. He feels like his parents' decision for him to marry Amma Atta, who came from "power", because they believe it will benefit them. James explicitly talks about not liking Amma Atta, as they used to play as children in the village. He describes that as she got older, she would do things like laugh before he finished telling his joke, which made him dislike her. His parents feel as though, in order to keep the family name strong, they must force their son into an arranged marriage with a girl of similar status. In the later chapter, James continues to describe his love for Akousa and how unimaginable it is. He explains how he would leave everything in order to be with her, even if that meant he would be considered to be of low status. More specifically, he says that his status is useless to him, and he would simply want to live a life with a woman who can fulfill his desires. This can be seen as the specificity behind having a single key fit in one lock. The symbolism of the lock and key is crucial to the heart, as your heart is needed to live. This corresponds to James in that he would rather be dead than be with another person who is not the love of his life. In this case, Jame's heart beats fast when he sees Akousa and beats normally or slower when he is with Amana Atta. Only one key will work with its designated lock. No matter how you orient the key itself, if it is not compatible, it just won’t fit. The comparison shows that one key is meant for one person, and if you don't have feelings for another person, chances are the key won't fit. Overall, this would indicate that you are not the right people for each other. Keys are used to open doors, just like opening a new door to new feelings. In Akuas chapter, the firewoman in her dreams caused by the evil makes her burn her children: “Antwi Agyei continued. ‘What kind of evil does not know itself?’ he asked, and the crowd stomped its many feet against the hard earth. They slung the rope around Akua’s waist. ‘We have known her as the Crazy Woman, and now she has shown herself to us. Wicked woman. Evil woman. Raised by white men, she can die like one too’” (198). Akua feels lost; she is stuck in a situation where everyone she speaks to believes she's “crazy”. The firewoman is the source of destruction of Akua and her family, harboring the evil which has been passed on from generations upon generations. Every brain holds the mind of a different person, with different lives and different reactions to varying experiences. The brain symbolizes the balance that people have between good and evil. Some individuals have one side of the scale outweighed by the other, whereas others have a scale in equilibrium. Furthermore, there is a relationship between the brain and mind. This means that a person's actions rely on the actual brain and what they have inherited genetically. However, it is important to remember that the environment to which someone is exposed to, can influence which side of the scale it tips more towards. People can be inherently good but become bad because of what they are exposed to. Some may argue that Akua was born evil because no sane person would burn their children. Others may counteract this argument and say her way of life influenced this aggressive behavior. In Effias lineage there are situations where the evil depicted with someone is overpowering. No one knows or sees the dreams that Akua sees. They don’t know the feeling of setting your family on fire, while watching them burn to the ground. Overall, this imbalance between good and evil which has been passed down from generations can be depicted differently within each chapter of Effias lineage. In Yaw's chapter, he explained to his students that you cannot see history, but rather learn it from the stories which are passed down from previous generations: “‘This is the problem of history. We cannot know that which we were not there to see and hear and experience for ourselves. We must rely upon the words of others. Those who were there in the olden days, they told stories to the children so that the children would know, so that the children could tell stories to their children’” (226). Yaw was a baby when his whole body was set aflame by his mother. He himself does not recall the physical details of the event as it played out; However, Yaw received the simple details from the eyes of the storyteller before him. A physical map illustrates an outline of roads, rivers, cities and large landmarks, acting as an effective way that provides directions to a final destination. Different people see different pathways to reach a similar place. Some may take you on longer routes following smaller roads, while others take you on faster routes, like on highways. The scenery that each set of eyes sees will depend on which route is chosen. Similarly Yaw was only capable of telling the story through his eyes when the only direction on the map was given through the eyes of someone else. Those who told him the story took a path that led them to explain what they saw. The storytellers who described the story took their own paths that led them to explain what they saw. This reveals how different eyes can interpret the same piece of information or history. Additionally, fire is a recurring image present within each chapter of Effias lineage. Each set of eyes views this fire differently, depending on the route they’re on and the environment around them. Furthermore, a map is what provides the information, it's up to the individual to decide how they use that information and how they use their eyes to perceive the world around them. In conclusion a map as the lineage's eyes can be depicted differently within each chapter, depending on who the main character of the chapter is. Each character will take a different route and travel in their own shoes to reach a place where the story can continue to be told by someone else. Overall, it shows how the story is passed on based on the eyes of the previous generation.
