In Ziela they traded food specifically fish and like other African areas they traded ivory, gold, myrth, animal skins, frankincense, slaves, and ambergris. ibn Battuta did not like the this place, specifically the smell and he called it the most "[dirty] and disagreeable, and [stinky]" town in the world. He would even sleep on his ship rather than on land.

Mogadishu became cosmopolitan through trade as trade synthesized ideas from other societies and created a diversity of people in power. Merchants who traded there "brough their languages culture and religion" this made many people implement these aspects in their life synthesizing it with their previous morals. Also this learning of religion, culture, and language created a diversity of the people in power as the sultan spoke two languages native Somali and Arabic. I infer that intermarriage changed societal ties with Arabic societies and created a more Islamic society.
