         <description><![CDATA[<div>"To be in touch with the community, one has to enter into the physical places where the students live, and work to be invited into the emotion laden spaces the youth inhabit." (Emdin, p. 21).&nbsp;<br>As educators, we should be invested into our student's lives, and learn about who they are and where they come from. Students should feel that they can come to their teachers with any problems or difficulties they are facing, whether it is due to something going on at home, or in school. By investing in their lives and getting to know where the students come from and what their situation is, we are able to create a bond between us and the students, which allows student's to feel that they can open up to us. I chose this picture because I feel that it reflects the quote in that it shows a teacher taking the time to talk to one of her students who is having a difficult time. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"Some teachers understand that students come from places beyond the classroom and can acknowledge that these places have an effect on students and the spaces they occupy. However, many teachers cannot see beyond their immediate location (the school) and therefore have a very limited understanding of space (Edmin, p. 23).&nbsp;<br>As educators, we should understand that students come from many different backgrounds and cultures, which can sometimes effect the way they act or behave within the classroom. We should step back and understand that students are not just who they are in school, but they have lives outside of school that have an influence on who they are as students. I chose this picture because It shows a group of children which highlights cultural diversity, which I feel fits this quote well. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"If we are truly interests in transforming schools and meeting the needs of urban youth of color who are the most disenfranchised within them, educators must create safe and trusting environments that are respectful of students' culture." (Edmin, p. 27).<br>I chose this picture because it shows several examples of what a safe and trusting classroom should be, which I feel reflects the quote well. We as educators should always create a environment that feels safe and trusting to our students. We should create a space that celebrates diversity and makes each student feel that they are loved and respected by not only the teacher, but their fellow classmates as well. Students should feel just as safe in the classroom as they do when they are at home surrounded by family. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"For many of the white teachers, the process held an unmistakable element of racism. Phrases like "these kids" or "those kids" were often clearly code words for bad black and brown children." (Edmin, p. 33)&nbsp;<br>As an educator, or anyone for that matter, we should never single out a student as the "troublemaker" based on the color of their skin. Some teachers assume that children of a certain color skin will automatically be bad because they buy into the stereotypes placed on those children because of their skin color.&nbsp; Students should feel that they all have an equal chance to succeed and should never feel that they are treated differently because of the color of their skin.&nbsp;I chose this picture because I feel that it reflects the quote very well in that it looks&nbsp;to be&nbsp;be a young black boy upset about something at school. For the purpose of this assignment I am imagining that he is upset about getting in trouble for something that he did not do, but the teacher would not believe him because she assumed he was the "troublemaker" because she believes that all young black males are "bad". <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"However, the key to getting students to be academically successful (even if the teacher decides that success means passing an exam), is not to teach directly to the assessment or the curriculum, but to teach directly to the students." (Edmin, p. 40)&nbsp;<br>Sometimes teachers feel pressure to teach the standardized test or the assessment given to them by the school, but we should remember that students have individual needs and may learn in a different way. We should try to work with students to teach them in a way that fits with their individual learning needs, and helps them flourish in the classroom.&nbsp;I chose this picture because it shows a teacher working one-on-one with her student which I feel fits well with this quote. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>"In each instance, I would see people from diverse backgrounds, with different levels of skill and different personality types, create a space that allowed each participant to fully engage in, and gain something from, the fellowship with peers." (Edmin, p. 63-64) <br></strong>It is so important to create a sense of community within the classroom and create a safe space for students to feel that they can collaborate and work together without judging each other. It's important as a teacher to celebrate diversity in the classroom and make sure that no student feels excluded or&nbsp;teased whether it's based the color of their skin, or perhaps a learning disability. This video relates to the quote as Mr. Edmin, the Author, perfectly demonstrates a cypher, which is discussed in chapter 4 on cogens and cyphers. In this video You can see that all participants are coming together to create something amazing, and are fully engaged physically and mentally. This is a great example of how it should be done in the classroom, all students coming together and collaborating to create something with their peers while being fully engaged in the lesson.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>"I argue that additionally, the optimal way for youth language and experience to be used as a teaching tool involves having the youth themselves do the teaching." (Edmin, p. 84) <br></strong>In my field placement, my CT chooses one student every week to be the <em>Star Student </em>of the week, and that student gets to lead calendar. My CT hands them the pointer and that student gets to teach the other students and call on students to answer questions. Anyone who gets to lead calendar always feels so special, because they feel like they are getting to be the teacher for a few minutes. It also works as a great incentive as the students who have not been chosen yet based on behavior, are motivated to behave better so that they too can be chosen as star student and get to lead calendar. I chose this video because it relates to the quote in that it shows a little girl getting to teach her classmates something during a lesson. I think that calling on one student during a lesson to come up and show the class what we have been talking about, would be a great way for students to feel like they are getting to be the teacher, and make them feel like they are getting to teach their peers. I believe this would be an excellent strategy to use when the time is right.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>"I argue that an educator who has created a special handshake to share with students when they get an answer right can generate positive emotions because of the significance of the handshake in neonindigenous culture." (Edmin, p. 127)<br></strong>It is so important as a teacher that you build positive relationships with your students. It's important to make each one feel that you value them and care about them. By doing something personalized for each student, such as a special handshake, it creates a special bond with each student allowing them to feel loved by you, and that you care about them. I chose this video because it relates to the quote by showing a 3rd gradeteacher who has a special handshake with each of his students. The 3rd grade teacher shown in the video does the special handshake with each student twice a day to make each student feel special. This would be a wonderful way to connect with each student and create a sense of community in the classroom. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>"The teacher's task is to let student know how important they are and how essential their jobs and roles are to the functioning of the classroom." (Edmin p. 106)<br></strong>As a student in the education program, who's in an elementary school classroom four days a week, I see how excited the students get when they have a <em>job</em> in the classroom. Whether it's the line leader, caboose who turns the lights out, a buddy who helps walk a classmate to the clinic, or the <em>star student </em>of the week who gets to lead calendar, each job lets the student feel important and that they are adding to the smooth functioning of the classroom. I chose this video because it relates to the quote perfectly in that she explains how she decides what roles&nbsp;each student will have for the day, and how those jobs create a sense of community in the classroom. Sometimes giving students a job or task to complete in the classroom can make the student feel important and that their role is just as important as the teacher's in helping the classroom run smoothly. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>"Once students recognize that they are valued, they welcome the opportunity to engage in the dialogue." (Edmin, p. 71)<br></strong>One of the most important things you can do as an educator is to let your students know that you not only value them as a student, but as an individual as well. So many students come from situations that many of us could never imagine, and have no support or encouragement surrounding them at home. As their teacher, you have the opportunity to be that support and encouragement they need to succeed in the classroom. I chose this video because it relates to the quote in that it shows what a simple "you're special" can do for a student. The students in this video light up when their teachers let them know how special they are to them, and that they are the reason they do what they do every day.  Sometimes it's the simple things like letting your students know how much you value them, that mean the most. </div>]]></description>
