Crime Scene Investigation

I read an article on crime scene investigation, and how it’s done. I chose this topic because I am very interested in crime and mysteries, and how to solve murder mysteries, and any mysteries in general. This article shows the steps to how a crime scene investigation is conducted. First, they establish the scene dimension ands and identify any potential safety and health hazards. Second, they establish security. Third, they plan, communicate, and coordinate a theory. Fourth, they conduct a primary survey/walkthrough of the scene to categorize evidence. Fifth, they document and process the scene, with a plan in place. Sixth, they conduct a secondary review to ensure that the scene has been thoroughly searched. Last, they record and preserve evidence in a log. I have always wanted to learn how investigators work at a crime scene, and what steps they follow. Also, in reading this article, I learned about the different samples investigators take at crime scenes, and how and where the tests on these samples are conducted. After reading this article and learning about how crime scenes are conducted, I can understand murder mysteries better, and understand what investigators do better. My thinking was changed while reading this article, because I did not know that investigators follow a specific plan/order to how they address the crime scene. Although every crime scene is different and different things must be taken into account for, the basic steps to investigating a crime scene is usually followed. I also did not know about the many different jobs there were relating to a crime scene investigator. For example, there are crime scene investigators, crime scene analysts, crime scene reconstructionists, and senior crime scene analysts.

Jon Benet Ramsey

I read an infographic on Jonbenet Ramsey. Jonbenet was a 6 year old pageant girl who was found strangled and beaten in her basement in 1996. This case has been investigated for 20 years, and they still have not figured out the murderer. Her parents found a ransom note asking for $118,000 for Jonbenet back. Later, John Ramsey finds his daughter dead in the basement. This infographic shows a timeline of the day Jonbenet was murdered, all the way up to today. It shows each event that happened so far while investigating the case. I learned a lot while reading this infographic. First, I had known about the Jonbenet case and researched about it because I find it extremely interesting, but reading the infographic gave me other events and things I did not know about the case. For example, I did not know that the ransom note was written on a notepad in Mr.Ramsey’s office. This makes me wonder if he had something to do with it, or how the murderer got into his office. I also learned a lot about the first steps in which investigators took after this case, and probably cases that are very similar. First, since there was a ransom note, they did handwriting tests to see if it was the parents. They also did a lot of DNA tests on Jonbenet to find if any DNA matches. However, my thinking is shifted here, because if Mr.Ramsey carried Jonbenet up the stairs dead, then wouldn’t his DNA be on her already? If they did DNA tests, how would they know who the murderer is since Mr.Ramsey’s DNA has to be on there?

Kenneka Jenkins

I watched a blog on the murder of Kenneka Jenkins. Kenneka Jenkins was a 19 year old girl who died in Crown Plaza in Chicago, on September 15th, 2017. She was found dead in the freezer in the basement of the hotel. The police claim that the death was accidental, because there is no evidence concluding otherwise; however, there are many theories on who/how she died through the security cameras and pictures. I chose this topic because I am very interested in murder mysteries. I love to learn about different murders, why the case is unsolved, and who the murderer could be. While watching this blog video, I learned a lot about fake news. This is because while watching the blog, Kendall Rey, the youtuber, talked about how other people edited the security camera footage to show men guiding her towards the freezer. There are also a lot of other fake footage of her walking in the basement. However, the real footage from the hotel shows only Kenneka walking, and no one else is with her. Also, I learned that if Kenneka Jenkin’s mom pushed harder for a missing person’s case, they would have found the footage earlier, and would have maybe found Kenneka in the freezer not dead yet. I learned that you can file a missing person’s case whenever you want, and you don’t have to wait longer like the police say. If you want to file a missing person case, even if the police tell you to wait longer, you can file it as soon as you want. My prior knowledge was changed, because before learning about this murder mystery, I had heard about fake news, but never really understood it. However, watching the real footage from the hotel, and watching the edited versions, extremely showed me the effects and problems of fake news. Also, I had known about the death of Kenneke Jenkins, but never went into depth about what actually could have happened to her. There are so many different perspectives and theories of who could of killed Kenneka, and the police even think it was an accident because she was so intoxicated.

Caylee Marie Anthony

I watched a blog on Caylee Marie Anthony, by Kendall Rey. Caylee Marie Anthony was a two year old girl who went missing in 2008. Her bones were found in a garbage bag with duct tape over the skull. Her mother, Casey Anthony, was put in jail for child neglect, because her child was missing for 31 days, and did not contact the police or her parents during the time. She claimed that she wanted to find her herself and not risk any danger of getting the police involved. People think that Casey wanted to go out and party, so she drugged Caylee with Chloroform, and covered her nose and mouth with duct tape, which is how she suffered and died. However, Casey was found not-guilty for the murder, but most people still believe that she was the murderer. This case was extremely popular a couple years ago, yet I had never heard of it. I learned so much about this case while watching the blog, and I find it really interesting. I also learned about the consequences of lying to a law enforcement officer. Casey Anthony lied about everything, from her job, to her missing child. She lied to an officer about her job, therefore causing her to be in jail for four years. I also learned how tickets were sold for that case because it was so popular. Is this legal? Also, many people got into fights over these tickets, because everyone wanted to be there for the trial. My thinking was changed when I learned about how hard Casey’s life is right now. She can’t get a job, because every single person in America hates her, because everyone thinks she was the murderer. Although there are so many reasons why she is the murderer, she was proven innocent, and she should be able to live her life, get a job, and not be harassed everywhere she goes. My thinking also changed when I learned that Casey was 21 at the time her daughter was two. This is important because she is still very young, that she might not have wanted a kid, which could have caused her to murder Caylee.

Natalee Holloway

I read an article on Natalee Holloway, who was eighteen years old when she went missing during a class trip in Aruba in 2005. She was last seen with Joran van der Sloot, an Aruban native. Joran is seventeen, and has been a primary suspect, but has not been charged due to a lack of evidence. However, Joran is in prison for murdering a woman in Peru, also making him more of a suspect. Investigators have not been able to find her bones, or the murderer/kidnapper from this case. The family says there is no truth to the story, and that on every anniversary, there are crazies that somehow put themselves in the story, claiming they did it, or were there. While reading this article, I learned about Natalee Holloway, and her disappearance. I also learned all about the investigations, the bones they found that ended up not being human, Joran, and many more details about the case. I also learned that sex slavery is still happening today. Joran claimed in a crazy interview that he sold Natalee into sex slavery. However, we know that is not true, because later his attorney said it was made up for the media. Thirdly, I learned that there will always be crazy people who will try to get into the story. People will claim they were the murderer, they were there at the crime scene, they know information, etc. However, you have to know when people are trying to get publicity, and when people are actually telling the truth. That is why, in the end, Natalee’s father, Ben Holloway, claims that there is no truth to the story. My thinking changed when I read that she was last seen with Joran van der Sloot. This is because if she was last seen with him, and he murdered a girl in Peru, isn’t that enough evidence to prove him guilty? Also, I am wondering what she was doing with him, instead of being with her class. Was she seen with him at night where he could have drugged her? Or was she kidnapped by him? Additionally, why weren’t any of her classmates considered suspects, since they were all there with her on the trip. I have a lot of questions about this case, but every murder mystery has thousands of unanswered questions to it.

How Criminal Minds relates to psychology

Criminal Minds is a TV show based around a team of profilers from the FBI, who analyze the most twisted criminal minds to catch them before they act again. Criminal Minds is related to psychology, because they study the human mind, decide if a person is sane or inane, and through behavioural psychology and crime scene analysis. I read a blog prezi, called Criminal Minds Analysis: Psychological Perspective, by Emma O’neil and Milica Oliveric. This blog shows how the show connects to the many different psychology theories. For example, Kohlberg's theory and Freud’s theory. Kohlberg’s theory shows the different levels throughout children’s behavior, the pre-conventional level, the conventional level, and the post conventional level. Freud’s theory shows the affects of dreams and the parts of the mind. For example, he says that dreams lower the ego’s defenses. While reading this blog, I learned a lot about psychology, and the mind, and how it is portrayed throughout the show. I watch Criminal Minds for fun, but now I know the real evidence and information behind all of their investigations. For example, one of the main characters, Reid, has a dream about abducting a child named Riley Jenkins. These dreams become more frequent, they then turn into memories, and then he comes to the conclusion that his father might have killed this girl. This relates to Freud’s theory, because he believes that dreams are a part of the person’s expression of internal conflict. Reid blamed his father for the death this girl, because to him, his father was a criminal for leaving him, therefore he wanted him punished. My thinking was changed while reading this blog, because I did not realize the huge affect this show has on how society views mental illness. This show promotes the idea that mentally ill people are violent, and beyond help. This is an idea that is not true, and should not be created into a stereotype. Mentally ill people should not be viewed as violent people, when not all of them are. This is something that affects society enormously, and changed a part of my thinking about the show.
