In prehistoric times, Ireland was a patchwork of many small kingdoms. Many of these kingdoms survived despite various invasions. But in the 16th century, the English king brought Ireland under English rule, which resulted in numerous Englishmen moving to Ireland and colonising the area. As the English were Protestants, this colonisation was the beginning of many centuries of oppression of the Irish Catholics. In 1801, despite numerous attempts from Irish Catholics and other opponents, the Act of Union was made, merging Ireland with Great Britain. However, in 1919, after years of rebellion, the rebel leaders declared Ireland independent and called themselves the Republic of Ireland.
