On political economy, he thought that capital should not be considered more important than labor, nor that labor should be considered superior to capital, judging both dangerous ideas; that, rather, a healthy balance should be sought between these factors, since both were considered equally valuable for material development and justice. He was a great defender of vegetarianism and rejected any form of mistreatment of animals.

When his contract was finished, he prepared to return to India. At the farewell party in his honor in Durban, leafing through a newspaper, it was reported that a law was being drafted in the Natal Legislative Assembly to deny the vote to the Indians. He postponed his return to India and devoted himself to the task of preparing various petitions, both to the Assembly of Natal and to the British government, trying to prevent the law from being approved. Although it did not achieve its objective, since the law was enacted, it nevertheless managed to draw attention to the problems of racial discrimination against the Indians in South Africa.

Gandhi returned to India briefly to take his wife and children to South Africa. On his return, in January 1897, a group of white men attacked him and tried to lynch him.

On January 30, 1948, when Gandhi was on his way to a prayer meeting, he was murdered in Birla Bhavan (Birla House) in New Delhi, at the age of 78 by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu radical apparently related to ultra-rightist groups in the India, as it was the Hindu party Hahasabha, who accused him of weakening the new government with his insistence that the promised money be paid to Pakistan.
Godse and his accomplice Narayan Apte were tried and sentenced to death. His execution was carried out on November 15, 1949. However, the one who is considered as the instigator of the murder, the president of the Hahasabha party, Vinaiak Dámodar Savarkar, was freed without charge for lack of evidence.
A test of Gandhi's struggle and his search for God is in his last words before dying exclaimed: "Hey, Rama!". This is interpreted as a sign of their spirituality, as well as their idealism in the search for peace in their country. These words are written in the monument erected in his honor in New Delhi.
