Mariatu Kamara - The UNICEF Representative for Child in Armed Conflict and author of the book, The Bite of the Mango, visited our library today. Our students were informed, challenged, inspired and motivated to overcome challenges, find God's purpose in their life and carry it out. Mariatu, through her stories, informed the students about the Civil War in Sierria Leone, the effects of war on children, including Child Soldiers, and the joys of being forgiveness. Her story was very impactful. 12 classes were in attendance.

(from Vanessa Wosik - this time, one year ago) highlighted 'author of the week' and had students hand in their guesses to the circulation desk to win a Tim's gift card and printing card. The final clue each week was a picture of the author and one other clue was a quote from their books. The authors chosen are featured in a QR code posted on the bulletin board in the library with the corresponding books underneath. If students wanted to narrow their guesses, they could scan the QR codes, match the clues with the author, and make their guess (and maybe take out the book too!)
-Two other TLs suggested a movie screening or mini film fest. I previewed one of the films which I showed (Good Hair)
-Asked for student volunteers to be a part of a planning committee since our school didn't have a diversity committee/multicultural club
-The scrolling announcements featured important black Canadians with their pictures and a brief description of their contribution to Canadian society

We launched our "Love your library" contest today. Students are invited to fill out a ballot to be entered into a draw for a super cool prize (to be determined). The ballot asks them to write down one way that the St. Michael library has a left a mark on their lives in and outside of school. Hoping to see lots of participation.

PIP Halloween Story

Kasey and I created a personalized Halloween Story for the PIP students! The story incorporated each of the students' names. At the end of the reading, students were surprised with a sweet treat! The students loved the book so much, we will be creating another story for Chrismas!

Golden Ticket

Thanks to Pinterest, I re-created this Golden Ticket idea. When a teacher asks to bring their classes down to choose books, I always pick out a few that I think they would like. Now I will put one of these in it and hopefully someone chooses the book with the Golden ticket. You can also place a few in some other books throughout the library.

Eman and I placed numbers on the back of the wrapped books and had a corresponding list with the book information for each number so that when students signed out a 'gift', they didn't have to open it immediately.

Blind Date with a book!

In honour of Valentine's Day we launched blind date with a book this month. I wrapped 7 mystery books. Students only knew the book's genre (and trigger warnings if necessary). They don't know which book they are getting until they have signed it out. 4 out of the 7 have already been signed out.

-Book spine poetry Instagram post introducing poetry month with an announcement on the PA introducing the month and the contest/displays etc.
-Hip Hop or Shakespeare? interactive bulletin board
-Poetry creation station: samples of found and blackout poetry with materials for creating a poem (old pages of books, magazines, scissors, glue, paper, pens/markers etc.). If they hand in a completed poem, they enter to win a prize
-Poems for grabs for 'poem in your pocket' day (April 29)
-Display of poetry books
-Winner of the poetry writing contest announced on Shakespeare's birthday
-Send poetry roulette link and TedTalk that Andrea posted on the SharePoint to the English department to share resources
