It is an Italian Espresso Bar that I have been visiting since I was a teenager. It is always busy with people grabbing a quick bite before or after going to the theatre or movies close by. Yet, it has the warm and friendly atmosphere of an Italian grandma's kitchen. It is a small place and it's decor remains pretty much unaltered since it opened with the first espresso machine in Melbourne in 1954. When you visit Pelligrini's you have to be quick to grab a seat at the long aluminium bars with stools or at the share table out the back. The staff are friendly and jovial. They are happy to talk newcomers through the menu that also hasn't changed since the 50's, offering suggestions. 

I always get the lasagne. It is very cheesy and rich and comes with a slice of bread with generous dollops of butter. In winter, a well made coffee is a great accompaniment but in summer you can't go past the refreshing watermelon granita. It is a cordial flavoured with fresh watermelon juice and shaved ice to make it super cool. If I have room, for dessert I have the homemade apple strudel with cream to top off a simple and tasty meal. 

If you enjoy friendly chaos, quick service and funny banter you will enjoy a visit to Pelligrini's. It is a piece of Melbourne's history, in which people used to English cuisine of meat and three veg, such as my Dad, tried pasta and real Italian coffee for the first time.
