Margaret was the youngest daughter of Joseph Fortescue, Chief Factor, Hudson’s Bay Company and Sarah Jane. She went to Miss Susan Parrott's, High-Class Ladies School in England, Dawlish, Devon, where her uncle Matthew Fortescue was a County Court Judge in Totnes.

She was enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps on April 22, 1915, in Montreal, Quebec.

In her spare time, we would assume she could have written letters to her loved ones. But it is hard to say with anything with confidence without limited specific information about her life

We can assume that her expectations of life were certainly not to die on a ship in war. She probably chose her profession with the expectation of living a fulfilling life caring and treating others.
Margaret trained as a nurse at Montreal General Hospital. With the outbreak of war she volunteered for foreign service and joined the Canadian Red Cross in 1915. She was 36 years old on attestation.

Margaret's life as a nurse during the war would be something that she would never forget. The work was relentless. Nurses were responsible for observing their patients closely and monitoring them for any signs of complications, as well as for delivering a range of treatments. The Irish nurse Catherine Black summed up their feelings when she wrote in her memoir, King’s Nurse - Beggar's Nurse:( image at the top)

Even before the war all nurses during that time wanted to help/heal their country, because that's what their job was.
Then during the war their job had become more demanding when they healed solider after soldier, still believing they can still salvage what good there is in life as well as wishing for peace in their country. Their contribution to this war was a great deed that every soldier won't forget. Some have been given a very deserved awards after the war had ended. But some didn't make it to see the peace they fought so hard for: however their work will never be forgotten by the world. Unfortunately Margaret was one of them.
