Elie is very religous. His dad is not that religious. He wants Elie to focus on something else other than religion. Elie had a teacher that teaches him alot about his religion since no one else would.

"Why did I pray? A strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breath?

His relationship with religion was still good. Believing that Auschwitz was a better place than being in the packed hot car, he got hope. They're confidence went up.

"Here was a sudden release of the previous nights from the terrors of the previous nights. We gave thanks to god."

He wasn't as religious as before but he still was religious. He "thanked god in an improvised prayer for having created mud in his infinite and wonderful universe." He was being a little sarcastic because nothing was wonderful about where he was. He also questioned why god allowed babies and old men getting burnt.

"Why should I bless his name? The Eternal, Lord of the Universe, the all-powerful and terrible, was silent. What had I to thank him for?
