Anh came to Australia via a refugee boat which was attacked by pirates and lasted around 40 days[1]. He and his family fled Vietnam because of the after math of the Vietnam war. He was just a young boy when they arrived in Australia and starting out wasn’t easy. Anh and his brother Khoa Do went to a catholic school and when their mother couldn’t afford for both boy’s uniforms and school fees the school didn’t kick them out it just showed generosity. After Anh’s schooling he went to law school but he slowly found out that stand-up comedy was paying better and his main goal was to buy a home for his mother so he went with comedy[2]. Anh started to take more and more gigs with his comedy and eventually he became noticed. He is now a big comedy star and does many T.V shows based on people and cultures. Anh now uses his comedy and his fame to speak out about his beliefs on Australia’s refugee policy and just people in general. Anh believes in the Australia and that we’re more kind and welcoming then we think.

[1] Unknown, (2017). From boat to bellylaughs: Anh Do and The Happiest Refugee - ABC Sydney - Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Since that experience it has made Anh extremely trusting.

Anh named his book “The Happiest Refugee” because he had faith in Australia not to turn it down because of the word refugee. Anh like likes to show things as they are and not to avoid the difficult topics.

Generosity and faith

Anh believes everybody has the potential to be kind and that with that kindness people will be generous. He believes this because as soon as his family arrived in Australia they were supplied with clothes from a local school. Anh said there was a slight mix up and his brother got a dress[1]. The Do family found this really funny and he says that this fact has stuck with them. This makes Anh and his brother want to give back to everyone.

Family and Security

Anh believes that family and security are very important and they are on the top of his beliefs.

Whilst on the boat Anh’s brother Khoa was dangled off the edge of a boat by pirates and when the whole family made it to Australia their dad left them a year later[2]. Eventually at the age of 20 Anh finally bought his mum a house and he said it was his biggest achievement.

[1] [2]Unknown, (2017). From boat to bellylaughs: Anh Do and The Happiest Refugee - ABC Sydney - Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
How is Anh Do truly radical

Anh Do has done many things to publicise his beliefs and his character. He has published a book called “The Happiest Refugee”, which has been given many awards and has sold millions of copies. This book helped open people’s eyes about the experiences of someone has gone through and how they struggle. Anh has also released a T.V show called “Anh does Vietnam”. This helped open the publics eyes to what people in the 3rd world go through every day and how they make it through.

Anh Do is a very famous person because of his comedic status and appearances in many public T.V shows. As said above Anh writes and goes on T.V shows that aren’t “main stream” yet they make it on main stream T.V. This just proves Anh has the power to influence the public in many ways. But the main things Anh does is open people’s eyes and gives them all the facts about refugees so people can make an informed decision. He doesn’t tell people what to think he just gives them different ways of thinking about it.

When Anh was writing his book “The Happiest Refugee” the publishes and lots of people he was around where telling him to change the book name to something other than refugee. But Anh believed in the public to buy the book anyway. He took a risk of sorts and believed in thousands of people to buy his book no matter the title.

Anh has done many T.V shows to do with refugees and unlike many other refugee shows Anh’s don’t try and force you to change your ways. Anh gives you facts and he delivers you these in a kind way. He can get serious but he never forces the facts down your throat. Once he’s delivered the facts he then doesn’t tell you what to believe. He leaves it up to you.

There are many people who are against refugees and would dislike Anh Do’s views a lot. There are even political parties who are against refugees and some of them would be quite offended by Anh Do’s views.

What I have found most inspirational about Anh Do

I find Anh Do inspirational for many reasons. The first one has to be the fact that he came from Vietnam and survived the boat trip to Australia even though they were attacked by pirates. Once Anh and his family made it through the ordeal they were surprised at Australia’s generosity and they wanted to give back. Anh has given back in a different way he has given people the gift of knowledge and a choice. The more I learn about Anh the more I notice how kind he is. One of his recent T.V shows which is called “Anh Do’s brush with fame” is about him meeting famous people and as he talks to them he paints their face based on them as a person. He is very considerate and kind during this and when I saw an episode it really changed how I think about Anh and how I think I should look at the word. Anh looks at it with an open mind and he believes everyone is equal and I think I should be doing more of that.
