Abu Ghraib was a prison twenty miles from Baghdad. It was notorious for weekly executions, torture, and bad living conditions. As much as fifty thousand men and women were held there at one time, in 12 foot by 12 foot cells.

Breaking chemical lights and pouring the phosphoric liquid on detainees; pouring cold water on naked detainees; beating detainees with a broom handle and a chair; threatening male detainees with rape; allowing a military police guard to stitch the wound of a detainee who was injured after being slammed against the wall in his cell; sodomizing a detainee with a chemical light and perhaps a broom stick, and using military working dogs to frighten and intimidate detainees with threats of attack, and in one instance actually biting a detainee.

The prison was led by General Karpinski. She said that for many of the Iraqi inmates at Abu Ghraib, “living conditions now are better in prison than at home. At one point we were concerned that they wouldn’t want to leave.” A month later, General Karpinski was formally admonished and quietly suspended, and a major investigation into the Army’s prison system was under way.

The was photographic evidence and witness statements to back up the allegations. The photographs showed the G.I.s taunting the inmates, and forcing them to perform humiliating poses and sexual acts on each other. As there was no way to argue against photographic evidence, 11 soldiers were charged, with Charles Graner, who was the Warden of the prison, being released last in 2010, and was on supervised release until 2014.

The conditions of prisoners in the Middle East can be used as a current event to relate the Abu Ghraib scandal to. In one instance, a patient jumped to his death from the top floor of Ibn Sina. His body showed signs of torture. As it turned out, there was a special section of the hospital had been used for years to detain and interrogate political prisoners. This is similar to the Abu Ghraib prison scandal because the torture of these patients went unnoticed for an extended period of time.

A lesson to learn from this is that you can't always trust whats given to you. In this case, many people expect and assume that U.S. soldiers are always on their best behavior, making limited mistakes, but this case blows that mindset out of the water.
