In the poem, "O Me! O Life!" by Walt Whitman, the author seems to find himself in a position of puzzlement as he questions if there is genuinely a purpose in life for humans. Whitman describes that in the world, the "cities [are] fill'd with the foolish" (Line 2) who faithlessly seek purpose in life. However, Whitman troubles himself in that he explains that "with the rest me intertwined" (line 6). The following statement created a problem in that neither Whitman nor other people in society knew the purpose of life; however, at the end of his poem, Whitman answers his question by explaining that the only use for us to exist is in our very existence and that, in this existence, we "may contribute a verse" (line 9).
