The Florence Cathedral, as seen below, has many pointed arches that are seen in many other Gothic cathedrals. There are also many oculi (circular windows) that are very unique. There is a lot of ornamentation of angels and other religious figures on the outside of the building. There are many statue columns that protect the cathedral and add to its beauty. Finally, although you can not see it in the picture, the inside of the cathedral contains tracery (thin frames of stone). In the picture seen below, the architecture of the building is way more detailed than the churches in my community. The entrance have large arched windows and engravements. At the churches near me they are much shorter and less detailed. These pointed arches bring out the beauty of the cathedral. One other thing that stands out to me is that there are gargoyles on the outside of the gothic cathedrals to scare people into going to church. This is very different to the churches today because our churches are more subtle. Some of the techniques include a different way of providing stability, in this specific case for the cathedral down below as well as in many other buildings of this type, pointed arches, and ribbed vaults are used not only to even out the weight of the stone, and provide structure but also decorating the building such that it stands out to all. Not to mention the intricate carving of patterns and the addition of sculptures that more than anything add to the distinctive factor of the Gothic architecture. For instance the one's i've been to aren't so freely spaced and they have more wall then stained glass windows. Also the pillars at the building are very wide unlike the ones Goths used. In fact the flying Buttresses weren't a common thing when going to my common Cathedral. Let's not forget to mention that Gargoyles and The Rose Symbol also aren't mostly used either. They usually don't have many statues at all. In conclusion those are the things that normal and Gothic Cathedrals vary in.

One thing that makes Gothic cathedrals so unique is the large use of stain glass windows to make them look more appealing to people in medieval times and to show stories illiterate people couldn't read. Flying buttresses, used commonly in medieval cathedrals, are not as common today as they were when Gothic cathedrals were built.
