My biggest "take away" from reviewing the resources on burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma was that counselor self-care should be a requirement and not just a vague suggestion to keep peace. Under no circumstances should this be put to the side or ignored because if it is then we are not working at full capacity and are unable to provide good help and unable to be present for ourselves and our families and friends.

Self-care is a crucial aspect of the helping profession because we see and hear things about our students/clients that can cause great pain and suffering to our mental health if we do not care for ourselves. As "secret keepers" we are full of trauma and feelings of all the people that we help, without taking care of ourselves these traumas and feelings can take over our psyche and lead to mental health struggles of our own.

The self-care strategies that I use to ensure that I take care of myself are: enjoying my identified hobbies (reading, walking/hiking, game nights) and meditation/yoga. I always have a book available to read for fun if I feel the need when I get home from work. I walk my neighborhood and go hiking around my area with my family when time/schedules permit and I have a few game nights a month with friends. These game nights are extremely helpful to me as they are a big source of fun and comfort. I also have started practicing yoga/meditation again. I used to practice yoga when I was in graduate school and remembered how much I enjoyed it so I started practicing it again.
