According to Homer, the cyclopes were created by Poseidon, god of the sea. These monsters were made to be as large as earth-born giants and possessed a fragile eye in the center of their forehead. It is said that the most notorious cyclops of all, Polyphemus, who lived with his brothers, was the one to battle Odysseus. This man eating beast was then blinded by Odysseus and placed a curse on the hero as revenge.
These cyclopes believed they were above the law and respected nobody, not even the gods.

The cyclops has many abilities and attributes that they are able to use to their advantage. For example, Polyphemus is strong and can lift very heavy objects, however, he only has one eye and can often be blind sighted. He is large and bulky, yet clumsy and dumb. His strength is undeniable, but he can be challenged by wits.

Polyphemus's Impact

After encountering the cyclops, Odysseus decided to outsmart him and get him drunk off wine. Polyphemus did not realize what was happening and passed out as a result, and Odysseus took advantage of his disorientation to blind the beast once and for all. After being tricked into believing Odysseus's name was "No Man" he called out for help, yelling, "No man is hurting me! No man is killing me!" Odysseus's arrogance, however, got him in trouble when he wanted to take credit for blinding the giant cyclops, and boasted his name was Odysseus and he was the one to cause him harm. Angry after discovering the real suspect in the blinding, Polyphemus calls upon his father, Poseidon to curse Odysseus. This caused a large impact in the story because Odysseus's journey took 10 years longer to complete and most of his men died as a result of the harsh voyage. His impact in the epic was a significant one, for if it weren't for the curse, the trip would have been way shorter.
