The genre

In this performance, our aim was to successfully fuse the given genre of country music with a rap. To do this, we styled the song as a typical country piece using acoustic guitar, bass guitar, drums, flute and vocals, using love as a topic commonly found in country songs. The rap was also written around love, and came in near the end in order to change the structure of the song and make it more exciting.

The development

The song developed in the first place from being simply a country song, as it was a group decision to make it more exciting by using a rap in the piece.

Another development was the use of the vocalising in the section leading into the rap. I think that this helped make it more exciting rather than having only the bass play here, and this was also used in the outro later on.

The song opened on the guitar playing strummed chords, and then drums coming in with the snare on the second bar. When the vocals come in on the verse, the drums play a more complicated rhythm alongside the guitar and with the bass playing staccato. After the verse, a pre-chorus helps build up with the drums playing a single snare hit in each bar and the guitar changing the chords, playing them broken, then progressing to a crescendo with the drums into the chorus where the notes are more frequent. In the chorus, the chords are changed again and the guitar is strumming them again with the bass playing the root notes as legato. After the chorus, the tempo slows to play a short 2 bar break of instrumental before increasing the tempo and going into the second verse. The pre-chorus and chorus are repeated here. Here, the transition into the rap begins. The bass plays 8 notes per bar of the root notes from the chorus, and on the last beat of the bar there is vocalising from the singers. This goes on for two bars whilst the guitarist moves to the drums, and the drummer moves to the microphone. The rap is over the same root notes as before on the bass, with the vocalising still repeating and the drums are now playing alongside them. The rap lasts for eight bars, and then drops out. The outro is played by the bass playing the same notes, the vocalising, and a cymbal hit in each bar until the song fades out.

Before performing, we discussed our song as a country song with a twist to it, this being the rap and the change-around we used. I believe that our performance was an accurate response to this as we did use country themes in the song, and we made it exciting by adding our own talents and creativity to the song too.

Post-performance, our peers had given us nothing to improve on. Personally I would have liked to added more country-associated instruments to the piece, like a banjo.

I think that my personal strength in this song was leading the other instruments. This is seen especially just prior to the rap beginning, where I keep the time of the song going as the drummer and guitarist swap places to begin the rap. In order to improve my own part in the song, I think I could have been more exciting with my solo part. On the other hand, making this too complicated could have made it hard for the other instruments to come back in as I was keeping time.

Overall, I think we successfully managed to fuse the genres we used, and we created a song that was exciting and obvious in regards to the genre but with our own twist.
