The Third East Asian Comparative Literature ConferenceFu Jen Catholic University, Taipei, Taiwan

The Third East Asian Comparative Literature Conference, “Literary Imagologie in East Asia: East Asian Images of Each Other,” sponsored by the ROC Comparative Literature Association and hosted by the Fu Jen University Graduate Institute of Comparative Literature, will take place in Taipei on December 12-13, 2009. The First East Asian Comparative Literature Conference had the topic “Methodologies of Comparative Literature Studies in East Asia” (November 2005) and the second “Comparative Literary Studies in East Asia” (December 2007).

The study of the phenomenon of literary images of each other in East Asia is still at an early stage of development, unlike in Europe, where Imagologie had an important role in the establishment of Comparative Literature as an academic discipline. This conference will bring together scholars from East Asia and elsewhere who are working on the conference theme.
Proposals appropriate for the following four main sessions of this conference are most welcome:
How Chinese literature sees its East Asian neighbors [or, other]
How Japanese literature sees its East Asian neighbors
How Korean literature sees its East Asian neighbors
How Taiwanese literature sees its East Asian neighbors
Two types of papers are particularly sought: discussions of the methodologies used in the study of literary images of East Asia by East Asians, and papers examining how images of East Asia function in the literary construct.
The official languages for the conference are English and Chinese. Proposals to present a paper at this conference should be submitted by February 28, 2009. Notice of acceptance will be announced by March 27, 2009. The announcement of the keynote speakers will also be made March 27, 2009. Please e-mail your proposal prepared as a Word document of not more than 500 words and a brief curriculum vitae to: Nicholas Koss (001193@mail.fju.edu.tw)
