Be resilient - For years, we have defined resilience as staying strong amidst the adversity. Actually, in these uncertain times, resilience means more of whether one has the courage to admit vulnerability and seek help. Resilience to me is also about recharging after tough times.

Communication - Under such uncertain times, open communication and robust idea -exchanges are crucial. Are we able to turn our assemblies from top-down ideas / values cascading sessions into bottoms-up initiatives or even townhall sessions (where the student population question the SLs, Excos and Teschers on the rationale of School Rules and Policies? Such sessions will be rich training ground for students to enhance their confidence of delivering across their ideas and to deliver their ideas across both assertively and constructively.

Stop espousing that dangerous notion of studying hard to get a stable and safe job to our future generations. Instead, we should constantly inculcate and role-model the importance of the growth mindset to our kids. In their lifetimes, they may have to completely unlearn and relearn new skillsets at various stages of their adult working life. Who knows they may even have to learn to start their own businesses if jobs are hard to come by.

Take, for example, the curriculum time of the pupils. In a matter of a few months, the pandemic has changed the conventions of curriculum time for pupils. Instead of a normal school day, they can be learning or not much at all through a learning platform. In charting the way ahead as educators, we need to reflect and work out the most effective ways (what, when and how) of using remote teaching and learning for pupils and teachers. This would inevitably lead us to rethink our use of digital tools and teaching strategies to teach better and, as educators, how can we use online tools or videoconference platforms flexibly for rich sharings among teachers or even engage parents to support their children’s learning? It is not a question of ‘can or not’. We have no choice. We have to be part of the driving force in envisioning the post-pandemic Singapore.

A dangerous and naïve thing for us to do now is to simply declare, “let’s accept this as a new normal”. To a certain extent, it is important, in order to bring order to our current turbulence. However, as what the World Economic Forum has aptly pointed out- evoking the “new normal” does not allow us to deal with the totality of our present reality.

As educators to our pupils, this period is an opportune time for them to exhibit their bravery, resilience and teamwork. While they are navigating in this storm bravely, they know we are their lighthouse; to guide, share their worries and offer timely assistance. We are, and always will be, their safe haven.

As educators in the fraternity, it is a crucial time to support one another and be open to unconventional approaches to help our students.

I envision a post-pandemic Singapore where all of us emerge united. Battled, but not beaten.
