Email Etiquette: How to Email a Teacher

There are a number of reasons why you may need to email a teacher:
- You need help on an assignment
- You want to request an extended deadline
- You would like to ask a question about a grade
- You would like the teacher to notice new work that you turned in.

Here are a few etiquette rules:
1. Make sure to add a subject that reflects what topic your email addresses.
2. Make sure to write in a formal style. This means that you will address the teacher by name, write in complete sentences, use capital letters and punctuation appropriately and spell check before sending.
3. Make sure to write in a friendly tone. Criticizing, complaining, or demanding are not successful strategies, however politely requesting something is much more effective. If you turned in the work late, acknowledge that your work was late.
4. If you are including another person in your email, do a "cc" (carbon copy) not a "bc" (blind copy). It is polite to let people know that others are reading their email.
5. Be patient in waiting for a response. Remember that teachers don't work on weekends or late at night, and sometimes they have many emails to read through.
6. If you don't receive a response after 2-3 school days, resend your email. It might have been accidentally missed.
