Ask students to repeat directions by telling them to a partner, repeating them to the teacher chorally, or the teacher calling on individual students to repeat directions.

Use multiple modalities to post directions and expectations. Learning goals can be discussed when directions are given, but also posted somewhere in the classroom and even on the assignment for students to use to check their own learning progress.

Check in with students during and after lessons to be sure they are on track to accomplishing the goal for the lesson.

Use quick and informal checks for understanding of the content. This could be a short thumbs-up routine or a single math problem given on an exit slip or a warm-up.

Give students opportunities to discuss with each other. Talking through a problem can help people process the problem and possible solutions. Children may also be able to make more sense of a problem when they find a way to understand it in their own way using their own words. The teacher should be a part of the conversation to be sure the language used is accurate in describing the problem, but allow students to access their own working vocabularies to try to describe the problem and solutions.
