They were each self efficient until Napoleon invaded Italy combining it as a whole. Although when he was defeated they, again, split themselves into separate states. Each state started to fight for independence. The roman republic was lead by Giuseppe Mazzini, who also founded the early Italian revolutionary groups. Giuseppe Garibaldi was a famous revolutionary at the time and was convinced to capture Sicily. He capture it and fought his way North with his read shirts and support from the British. Garibaldi then handed his southern conquest to Victor combining most of Italy. Venice was given to the Italians by the Germans (Bismark) and Rome the last missing piece, was abandoned by the french in 1870 during the Franco-Persian War.
