The effect of light on growth

In this experiment, students can monitor how different types of light affect plant growth. A student will start with three plants of the same type (flowering plants generally work best) planted in similar soil and holders. One can be placed in an area of high sunlight exposure, another in an area of medium light exposure and another in an area with little exposure to the sun. Over the period of a week or two, teens can monitor how each plant grows.
Source - http://teens.lovetoknow.com/High_School_Biology_Experiments

Plants are affected by light that falls into the “blue” spectrum of the light scale. Daylight, fluorescent light and grow lights all have “blue” tones in them and will help provide the light your plant needs. Incandescent and halogen lights are more “red” and will not help your plant grow.

Plants affected by light shortages or too little blue light will have the following signs:
-Stems will be leggy or stretched out
- Leaves turn yellow Leaves are too small
- Leave or stems are spindly Brown edges or tips on leaves - Lower leaves dry up
