Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

The first stage of Erikson's stages of Development is one of the most crucial as it sets you up for future interactions later on in life. Being able to trust and understand your caregiver is something that can be instilled early on to promote a happy and healthy enviornment. My mom tells me when I was a baby and I was trying to walk, I trusted them to hold on to me and not let me fall. I would say that I resolved this stage with trust. Our book says, "If trust predominates, as it should, children develop hope: the belief they can fulfill their needs and obtain their desires" (McGraw Hill, 151). I think that to this day I have dreams and desires so the idea of trust vs. Mistrust in this stage I resolved with trust.

Stage 2: Autonomy Vs. Shame

The second stage shows that one is able to develop independence and establish self-control. When I was younger I liked to play with my toys by myself because I didn't want others to mess up my toys. Although selfish, it shows independence and the ability for me to know what I want and how I want something. Our book states, "As children are better able to make their wishes understood, they become more powerful and independent" (Mcgraw Hill, 156). I have been instilled with dreams and I know I have the power to achieve these dreams and make people understand these dreams. For this stage I believe my resolution was Autonomy.

Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt

This stage is what establishes purpose and place in society. I have always been really independent and I would consider myself a leader. The ability to be independent and take initiative sets you up for things later in life and success and satisfaction within oneself. I have always gotten good grades and have been a positive influence on others. I would consider myself independent to this day and I think that this stage is one of the most important. Our book says, "Children who learn to regulate these opposing drives develop the virtues of purpose, the courage to envision and pursue goals without being unduly inhibited by guilt or fear or punishment" (Mcgraw Hill, 210). I would say that the resolution I chose in this stage was initiative.

Stage 4: Industry Vs. Inferiority

In this stage a sense of motivation and drive to be better is developed. Those who excel in this stage are able to work hard and know that their work is contributing and helping others. Inferiority is the sense of being less than others and later on in life can lead to problems in friendships and relationships. Low self-esteem and low confidence can emerge from inferiority and create a toxic mindset for people. Being able to understand industry at this age is crucial as it helps determine the successful. The book states, "According to Erikson (1988), a major determinate of self-esteem is children's view of their capacity for prodcutive work, which develops in his fourth stage psychosocial development: industry versus inferiority" (Mcgraw Hill, 276). I think that I was able to establish industry because I am independent and able to know my worth and place in society.

Stage 5: Identity vs. Confusion

This stage is the crucial stage of finding yourself. There are three stages of identity, occupation, sexuality, and morals. This stage helps lay groundwork for future crisises. Fidelity is a huge part of this stage as it is a place to explore loyalties in friendships, relationships, and faith. On the other hand, confusion, is not being open minded to change or differences and cliquishness. There is importance to independence and exploring in this stage of life and it happens at the age where many people integrate into society to become their own person. The book says, "...is to confront the crisis of identity versus identity confusion in order to become a unique adult with a coherent sense of self and a valued role in society" (Mcgraw Hill, 336). I have not yet reached this stage in my life and there are times when their is confusion about who I am and people in my enviornment that effect that. I think my resolution for this in the future will be identity because I am very confident in what I do and who I am as a person.

Stage 6: Intimacy Vs. Isolation

The 6th stage of Erikson's stages is intimacy versus isolation. This stage typically happens around the ages 19-29. Success in this stage is described as finding meaningful relationships with others. Erikson described intamacy as love and understanding for another. The opposite of this is isolation and being alone throughout this stage in life. Isolation can happen for many reasons. There could be many problems with one trying to connect with others on an emotional level. One might have a rough past, trust issues, fear of commitment, past relationships, and troubles with self-disclosure. The book says, "Greater intimacy, loyalty, and sharing with friends mark a transition toward adult like friendships" (McGraw Hill, 351). Again, I am not to this stage yet, however I think when I do get there I will be able to form successful intimate relationships.

This stage shows productivity and the ability to be a functioning member of society. A huge part of this stage is being able to nuture and care for long-lasting or permanent things. An example is parenthood and fostering children. This stage is not mentioned in the book as it typically happens from age 30-64. I think eventually I will be able to successfully reach this stage and be able to have Generativity.

This is the last stage and typically happens at age 60 and onward. This stage is when things start to slow down and their is the idea of integrity and wisdom. Despair is the contrast of this idea and is typically a crisis as many think of life as shorter at this time. I think when I get older I will be able to have the resolution of wisdom as I think I am kind of wise right now.
