There may be some stories that are similar to it, but none of them could top how Albertalli makes the characters relatable and feel like they are actually real. Albertalli used the real social issue of gay discrimination to bring Simon through his journey of self-acceptance.
The author says that challenging the norm in society was the "the idea kind of developed as I wrote the book." (Albertalli, 1) She showed this theme with the most iconic line of the book, "Why is straight the default?" (Albertalli, 146)

When asked about his inspiration for writing this book, Whaley says that he "remember(s) as a teenager it was so easy to be judgmental of things that are different and that are outside the realm of your own experience. It's so easy to write off someone as a mystery you can't solve, so you don't try to" (Whaley 1). Whaley wrote this book in response to his own former ignorance with the things he saw as a teenager, along with the information he knows now.
Additionally, Whaley also struggles with panic attacks. This is something the main character in his book also experiences.
Whaley also used his life experience as a gay man to write Solomon, a gay character.

Levithan wrote the book by writing each body point of view in a day and then moving on the next day, with a new body. This kind of story can be seen as utilizing the multiple narrators convention used in many other books of this genre. Through learning of the inner struggles of a new person every day, Levithan shows a theme that you can't judge the soul of someone from outside appearances.

Whaley is very effective at shaping his story. The plot, characters, and theme were all very clear while reading the book. The plot of the book, when compared to the hero's journey, matches up very well. This makes it easy for a reader to understand the emotion of the story as it progresses because the author has set it up so that one can see what Solomon's 'Ordinary World' is like, how he got there, what makes him agree to 'The Call to Adventure,' and why he's so heartbroken when he finally discovers what Lisa has been keeping from him. Because it's realistic fiction, Solomon feels like a real person and the book shows his inner emotions and lets the reader sympathise and relate to him.The switching of narrators from Lisa to Solomon every chapter shows how the outside world views Solomon as crazy or a freak, and then shows why Solomon actually lives the way he does. This shows the main theme of the book which is that it's easy to judge people who are different, but there's more to the story than one might assume.

The message is that assumptions made about people are often wrong. The plot sticks to the hero's journey, and the realistic genre lets many readers sympathise with Simon.
