Learning Experience
  • Lesson starter - Think Pair Share - students consider what products they use and how much packaging they have. 
  • Students evaluate a number of product samples (still in their packaging) and discuss which parts of the packaging is necessary and also how the packaging was produced (is it environmentally friendly/ sustainable?). This could be linked to SDG 12. 
  • Students then (in pairs) focus on the 'Product' element of the marketing mix and try to redesign/ come up with an alternative more environmentally friendly way to package/ sell  the product. 
  • Could show a video of a zero waste shop as inspiration prior to students coming up with their idea. 
Resources
  • Product samples e.g. chocolate bars, iPhone packaging. 
  • Video on zero waste shop 
  • Template to redesign the packaging. 
Key Skills 
  • Managing information and thinking - Students will have to evaluate the current product packaging, understand how it is harmful and also remember that certain parts will still be necessary e.g. the contents/ ingredients. 
  • Being creative - Students will have to come up with innovate ways to reduce the environmental impact of this packaging. 
  • Working with others - students will complete this in pairs/ small groups. 
Assessment
  • Students will be questioned/ asked to discuss why they have chosen a specific product and how they feel they could make the packaging more sustainable/ less wasteful. 
  • Exit tickets - Students will be asked to reflect on this lesson and highlight something they themselves could do in their own life to take personal responsibility and to reduce waste in relation to product packaging.
