KENNEDY

On the morning of November 11,

1880, Edward Kelly met the fate he

so richly deserved in Melbourne Goal

—and he died for a crime that was

the beginning of his notorious career

as a bushranger, and one that was

hardly more  than two years old. The

robbery of the bank at Euroa, the

murder of Aaron Sherritt, the sticking

up of Jerilderie in New South Wales,

and the last dramatic battle with the

police at Glenrowen remained unpaid

for—for he was hanged for the mur-

der of Constables Lonerigan and Scan-

lan at Stringy Bark Creek, in the Wom-

bat Ranges, on October 26, 1878. Vir-

tually, he also paid the penalty for

the slaying of Sergeant Kennedy on

the same occasion, though he was not

indicted for the crime. The princi-

pal Crown witness, Constable M'In-

tyre, had not personally seen Kenne-

dy's murder and the only other

human beings had done so, Steve

Hart, Joe Byrne, and Dan Kelly had

perished in the affray at Glenrowan.

But Ned Kelly paid for poor Kenne-

dy's life with his own, as much as

he did for those of the two consta-

bles.

In March, 1878, a warrant had been

issued for the arrest of Dan Kelly,

Ned's younger brother, on a charge

of cattle stealing, and when trying

to execute it Constable Fitzpatrick, of

Benalla, had been wounded. Where-

upon the two brothers "took to the

bush," and before long were joined

in their hiding-place by Joe Byrne

and Steve Hart. For many months

the locality of their retreat remained

unknown to the police, but in the fol-

lowing October the latter received

fairly reliable information that it was

in the ranges, at the head of the King

River, where they had begun to raid

settlers' huts for provisions and sup-

plies, besides carrying on a consider-

able amount of horse stealing in the

neighbourhood. Accordingly, two

parties were dispatched to search for

them in the Wombat Ranges—one,

under Sergeant Steele, from Greta,

and the other from Mansfield, with

Sergeant Kennedy in charge. The

two townships lie about fifty miles

 It is estimated that they kill around tens of millions of animals over a night. The feral Cat is a global threat as it has contributed to the extinction of birds, mammals and reptiles. In Australia cats have contributed to 20 mammal extinctions.

 Feral cats eat 123 species of birds, 157 reptiles, 58 marsupials, 27 rodents, 21 frogs and 9 exotic mammal species. Cats kill at least 16 globally endangered species and 12 others classed as near threatened.

They were imported for farm and utility work; recreational riding and racing were not major activities

Kelly is the most famous of all Australian bushrangers. he was born in the Glenrowan area in 1855 and at age 15 had his first altercation with the police. Although not convicted, he was first charged with helping bushranger Harry Power, during robberies.
He was sentenced to 6 months hard labor shortly after for assault and indecent behavior and began this before his 16th. birthday.
After his release, he got a job working in a sawmill and stayed out of trouble for a time. he developed a reputation as a trick rider and boxer during this time, and seemed to have learned his lesson well.
When the sawmill closed in 1876 he was accused of stealing a bull, and soon became a target of the police who took out their frustrations on his female relatives. Kelly's resentment of this harrassment grew and he developed a hatred for the police which lasted through his short lifetime.
Kelly, with his gang, held up the Bank of New South Wales in Jerilderie in February 1879 and got away with £2,000. He left a letter with one of the clerks to be published outlining his reasons and philosophy for choosing the notorious path he was accused of. The Jerilderie Letter is now another part of the folklore surrounding Kelly and his gang.

Over the next few years the police tried many times to gain evidence on Kelly to get him behind bars until, on the 20th. of June, 1880, Kelly with a gang comprising his brother and others, attacked Glenrowan, cutting the telegraph wires and forcing railway workers to rip up the line. In the ensuing gun battle with police Kelly was shot in the knee and captured. He was hung in Melbourne on November the 11th. for his crimes. Some 4,000 Melbourne people attended the hanging.
The suit of armour which Kelly designed to protect himself in running gun battles with police is now a part of Australian folk lore. It comprised an iron helmet, something like an inverted bucket, with a slit for the eyes to see through.Â
A statue of Ned Kelly wearing his famous armour will be found in the town of Glenrowan, and a cell at the Beechworth prison is converted as it would have been during his incarceration there.

Ned Kelly is an integral part of Australian folk lore and expressions like "As bold as Ned Kelly" have become part of the language.
He was buried in the Old Melbourne Gaol and in 2013 his remains were exhumed and he was re-interred in the tiny Greta cemetery in north eastern Victoria, 132 years after his execution, at a private service attended by his descendents.
