During the mid 1800's many Americans both black and white began speaking out against slavery. Most felt that the U.S. did not fulfill its promise to have "liberty and equality for all" if slavery was to continue being a thing. Eventually slavery was ended in the north, but southerners still used slaves to help increase the amount of production of their goods. But many people continued to speak out against the wrongs of slavery in many different ways. Such as, William Loyd Garrison a publisher of the newspaper "The Liberator". Or Frederick Douglass who made his own anti-slavery newspaper "North Star".Many people became inspired by the works of these men and others against slavery.

During the time of the mid 1800's very few children attend school at the time cause of the cost of it. Most efforts to change this cause were led by Horace Mann, or later receiving the nickname "father of American public schools" for his work in the educational business. He spoke to many citizens of Massachusetts about what the importance was of public schooling. Eventually the citizens of Massachusetts agreed to pay an additional tax to build better schools, give higher salaries for teachers, and to open different schools to train teachers. These ideas were spread all across different states to improve their educational system which still continue to this day.
