Treatment consists of antibiotics. Antibiotic therapy for the affected patient and the patients sexual partners is recommended. Screening for other common sexually transmitted infections should also be performed. More than 95% of people will be cured if they take their antibiotics correctly. The two most commonly prescribed antibiotics for chlamydia are; Doxycycline-taken everyday for a week, and Azithromycin- one dose of 1g, followed by 500mg once a day for 2 days.

If left untreated, chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease in people with a vagina and lead to chronic pain and infertility. In people with a penis, untreated chlamydia can cause pain and swelling in one or both testicles. It is not recommended to leave a chlamydia infection untreated for more than a year. If you don’t treat your infection, there is an increased risk of permanent damage to the reproductive organs. It is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible if diagnosed with chlamydia.

If you have chlamydia when giving birth, your baby might also become infected. When newborns get a chlamydial infection from their mothers, they may develop eye inflammation (conjunctivitis) with redness, swelling, and discharge with or without pneumonia. The pneumonia often causes cough and rapid breathing. Chlamydia has also been associated with low birth weight. If your baby is infected, they may need antibiotics.
