The stock market crash began on October 24, which has been nicknamed "Black Thursday".

Anxious investors wanted to sell their stocks before prices could drop any lower.

On "Black Tuesday" (Oct. 29) alone, more than sixteen million shares of stock were traded.

After the crash occurred, people made "runs" on the banks and on the stock market. When United States banks could not repay their loans, thousands of them went out of business.

By 1932 stocks were worth twenty percent of their original value, and over a million people had lost their savings, jobs, and even homes.

Radio shows like Little Orphan Annie addressed issues that were prevalent in the '30s, such as economic policy, labor problems, and unemployment.

There were also regional variety shows that features singers and comedians. These performers, who were hired and promoted by individual studios, became local celebrities.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke to the American people through the radio in broadcasts that became nicknamed "fireside chats".

The 1930s was also the time when national broadcasting networks, like NBC and CBS, began to appear.

In 1938, a broadcast that dramatized H.G. Well's novel The War of the Worlds frightened many people, who believed the report of Martian invasion.

After it was launched in the spring of 1936, the zeppelin made ten round trips between Germany and the United States.

On its first 1937 trip, the Hindenburg caught fire during its landing attempt,

and the ship crashed just outside the naval base at Lakehurst, New Jersey, after less than a minute had passed since the appearance of the first flames.

less, many Californians saw "Okies," a derogatory name used for migrant workers, as job stealers.
