Women who have participated in women's movements for emancipation and who have fought for their rights in any area, both politically, with the right to vote, and economically, with the possibility of doing the same work, are called "Suffragettes".
The path that women have taken over the years to obtain recognition of their rights has been long and full of obstacles.
Between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century the will to succeed in obtaining the same rights as men began to spread among women. Thus began demonstrations with rallies, slogans and posters in various European countries including England, France and Italy.
The actual movement of "suffragettes", intended as a national movement created to demand women's suffrage, did not begin in the United Kingdom until 1869 and in 1897 the National Union of Women's Suffrage was formed, founded by Millicent Fawcett who tried to convince men to participate in the movement, without particular success. In 1903 Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), with the aim of giving women the right to vote politically, granted only to men. In those years the real women's protest began, with women chaining themselves to railings, setting fire to mailboxes, breaking windows and some even losing their lives.
It took many years of struggle, but in the end, in most parts of the world, in different years, women gained recognition for their rights and today they are considered as men with the same rights and duties.

The suffragette movement developed in similar forms in various countries. The first country to introduce universal suffrage was New Zealand in 1893, and only later Finland and Norway in 1906 and 1907 respectively. In Germany women obtained this right in 1919. In several other countries the conquest of universal suffrage it was more tortuous. France, for example, which had already had a first awareness in the French Revolution, granted the right only in 1945.

In Italy the process was partially slowed down by unification which took place only in 1861. The women voted, for the first time, in the administrative elections of the spring of 1946 as well as in the subsequent referendum of June 2, for the election of the Constituent Assembly and for the Referendum for the choice between monarchy and republic. The principle, established by the law decree of 1945 and signed by the Lieutenant general of the Umberto di Savoia Kingdom, was subsequently taken up by the Italian Constitutional Charter, which came into force in 1948 after the end of the Second World War.
