Once again, imagery is used to express Plath's thoughts. A good amount of metaphors are used in the poem. Symbols and personification of nature are used to connect ideas as well. An example of this is, "Tonight, in the infinitesimal light of the stars, The trees and the flowers have been strewing their cool odors. I walk among them, but none of them are noticing." It's composed of fourteen lines, what a sonnet is, and has a rhyme scheme of ababcdcd etc. Throughout the poem Plath uses imagery to talk about life and inevitable death. This is shown in the first couple of lines, "Today we move in jade and cease with garnet. Amid the ticking jeweled clocks that mark Our years. Death comes in a casual steel car." These are recurring images in the poem. "Compared with me, a tree is immortal, And a flower-head not tall, but more startling, And I want the one's longevity and the other's daring." (Lines 8, 9, 10). The aforementioned lines are the motifs used, and they help reinforce the concept of Plath's jealousy of the plants.

(Lines 7, 8). The first two lines I mentioned, combined, is an example of a metaphor.
