The issue of slums is a common urban challenge between Pakistan and Egypt. There is a lack of access to basic facilities such as clean water and electricity, and also health and education.
Egypt is home to 1,100 slum areas, 350 of which are in and around Cairo, many of which are labelled as “unsafe zones”.

In Pakistan, slums exist in large cities like Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. More than 50 per cent of the population of major cities lives in slums and squatter settlements (Katchi Abadis).

The individuals living in these slums are the most affected by the problem of clean water and sanitation because of poverty
Slums around the world, like those in Egypt and Pakistan, have been a centre for disease and destruction. Slums exist in the cities our members are from and we observe them on a daily basis, not taking many steps to help out. Such slums do not have access to basic sanitation and clean water. This lack of clean water and sanitation leads to the spread of several diseases, allowing loss of life, cattle and also affects economic aspects.

There is also a concept of alienation, where individuals are categorised without us even realising. Phrases such as "these people," or "the people living in these areas," creates a further divide.
