Strong emotions

My theme for this annotated boombox is strong emotions. I have chose to use preschool level students because these are books that my coworkers and I have shared with students. I think that books help them see their emotions, and relate to someone who may be feeling the same way that they are. Strong emotions can be but are not limited to; happy, sad, mad, angry, frustrated, sharing, leaving mom and dad, bullying, and rule following. All of these books follow the theme of emotions and they are not really in a particular order except for the first book. I will use this book to open up the talk about feelings in the first week of school and then for the 5 days of the first week I will read to of these books and we will talk each time and I will have a few activities to go along with some of the books.

book 1 - The Way I feel by Janan Cain-

This is a fun book for students to listen to and there are opportunities to change your voice while reading it to make it more interesting. I think it is important for students to hear about, and see different types of emotions. We all have emotions and we can get through them together.

This book goes through a bunch of different emotions (sad, disappointed, scared, happy ect.) Along with each emotions there is a picture that shows what the emotion looks like. On the last page of the book there is a small explanation of feelings.

For the activity portion of this book I will have students draw the emotion that they are feeling that day. I will offer them a time to share if they want but they do not have to.

book 2 - The Worrysaurus by Rachel Bright

The Worrysaurus is about a bunch of small things that cause the cute little Dino to worry. At the end of the book his mom helped him look at the bright side of things. In his backpack he found items that calmed him and he used them to calm his worrying.

I would use this book because it is about a strong emotion, and it has a solution. I really enjoyed this book, and it is one of the favorites in my classroom. After reading this book I would start a discussion with my students about things that we may worry about that we don't need to worry about, and how adults can help you with your worries.

book 3 Llama Llama Mad at Mama by Anna Dewdney

This is a poem style book about a Llama being mad at his mama. I really like all of the Llama llama books. This particular book is about a little llama who was having fun playing with his toys when his mom made him go with her to go grocery store. This book describes everything that mama buys, and what she would do. Llama throws a fit in the store causing "drama llama". Mama showed the llama how to make shopping more fun for them both.

A classroom example: I would have a graph with two sides and on one side I would put going out to do things and on the other side I would put stay home and each student would have 1 sticky note to put on the side they want and then we would talk about it.

book 4 - Grumpy Monkey by Suzanne Lang

This book is about a little monkey who woke up on the wrong side of the bed. He was feeling off, and everyone was accusing him of being grumpy based off the way he looked. All of his friends were trying to cheer him up, but it just didn't work. When he had some time alone to sit he realized he was grumpy and it was okay to be grumpy, but it wasn't okay to yell at his friends.

I like that this books talks about how sometimes when our friends are sad or mad they need space, and they don't need you to constantly try to fix it for them. It also shows that just sitting with someone and sharing can help rather than trying to change their mood.

For this classroom example I would have students draw a picture of something that cheers them up.

This is a book about a very selfish crocodile who would not share his water. The crocodile was very mean to the other creatures. The crocodile found himself in pain and trouble and no animal wanted to help. A small mouse came out and walked into his mouth where he found a bad tooth. All of the animals did not want to help the crocodile but the mouse, the crocodile rewarded the mouse for his kindness. Due to the mouses kindness the crocodile learned to share his river.

I will use this book to talk about the importance of being kind to our friends and sharing what we have so that if we need anything they would want to help us.

I chose this book because we often times talk to students about their negative emotions but its important to also teach them how to use kindness, and happiness. This book talks about ways for students to spread kindness using kind words, art, sharing, gift giving, and affirmations like confidence.

I will use this is in my classroom and I will have bring in a show and tell item that they are thankful for. I will also have them draw a picture of something they are thankful for that they can't bring to school like an emotion.

It also talks about how sometimes it's okay to be sad and that we cannot always be happy about sad things.

I will use this book to talk to students about things they are excited for, and things that they can be happy about today and we will make a thankful list of all the things we are thankful for during the day.

This book talks about how it's okay to be scared, but when things are not dangerous we need to be brave and do what is right. Sometimes things may seem so scary we want to run, but it's okay to help and be brave.

Being scared is a common emotion felt by young kids who are experiencing the world in a new light without their parents. It is important to practice positive self talk and to teach your students how to be positive towards themselves and to others.

This is about a Dino who does not like to wait and he often times get upset about things not going his way, or if they were taking too long. Mamma used things to help like deep breaths and rewards for being good. Dino learned a lot from waiting.

Preschoolers often struggle with patients because they want to make sure that they are being heard and they are often interrupters. I would use this book to talk to students about how to get my attention when I am busy and how we can keep our thoughts and our feelings inside until we have time to share them unless it is an emergency.
