Summative Grade: You must complete 3 DIFFERENT posts with all of the requirements and demonstrating that you have read, understood, and analyzed for both the content and the use of graphic novel techniques. Directions: Using writing, pictures, and/or video, analyze how the graphic novel elements in Persepolis convey the author's overall message about one of the essential questions topics in the text-- (1) Childhood: What affects us growing up into adulthood (2) cultural identity: How do individuals balance the demands and requirements of society with their own beliefs (3) Individual within a Revolution: How does a person survive in and make sense of a conflicted world? (4) Beliefs: How do we form our beliefs and what influences them?

Essential Question: 4: Beliefs
This technique demonstrates the essential question about beliefs as she is questioning her belief in God because Anoosh has been executed. She wonders where God was in all of this turmoil; thus, she is shouting at him to get out of her life. She is conflicted about her beliefs and the death is influencing her conflict with God.
Graphic Novel Elements: In this picture, the Speech Bubble shape is being used to show the extent of Marjane's anger as she is shouting at God. Her dialogue has an angry tone, and having the speech bubble be jagged emphasizes her shouting tone. Her trust has turned to anger, and this is conveyed in the jagged, shouting shape of the Speech Bubble.

Essential question 3: What does it take to go from being a child to an adult? Marjane is leaving her family and looks back after saying goodbye and sees her dad carrying her mom away. Marjane needs to go from being a child dependent on her parents to an adult who can live in a foreign country without family. The faces in this panel show the emotions of Marjane and he parents. Marjanes mother is so sad that she can’t walk home in her own. Her face shows a strong feeling of sadness. Marjanes father is carrying his wife and is looking at her and is sad. His face is black which shows his sadness. Marjanes face is pressed against a window as she watches them walk away. Her face shows a combination of shock and sadness as she realizes that she will not see her parents for a while.

Essential question 5: What is the power of graphic novels as a text type (the power of words and images interacting)? The power of graphic novels is that they can have few words to explain a very important event by having a powerful image do the explanation instead. This is shown in this panel where the image of a car about to run a woman over has a much more powerful explanation of what happened than the sentence above it. In the foreground a woman is laying in the street and looks terrified. This scared woman in the foreground gets the readers attention and the car racing toward her in the mid ground shows what horrible event is about to happen. The background is just a black square which doesn’t distract from the graphic scene in the panel.

Being bombed- Gabe

Essential question 3: What does it take to go from being a child to an adult? Marjane is in a city that is about to be bombed and she is overwhelmed and doesn’t know what to do. Unlike the adults in her family that tell everyone to go to the basement, she isn’t old enough or mature enough to handle these tough situations. The panel shows this by having her float through space and say that she was lost. Graphic weight helps readers know what’s important and draws the readers attention to certain things. This panel uses graphic weight by making the panel the entire page and almost all black besides 2 things, Marjane and the words saying they are being bombed. This draws a lot of attention and emphasizes the importance of these two things. Knowing how Marjane responds to tough situations tell us a lot about her

In this graphic, Marjane uses a cigarette that she hid from her parents to symbolize her ascension from childhood into adulthood. This action shows how Marjane was pushed to adulthood by the horrific events and surrounding that she is forced to endure and experience. She thinks that if she is an adult, or feels like an adult, that she will be more capable or resilient to these horrific events that she experiences. Satrapi uses the distinct facial expression of Marjane in this graphic to show her attitude towards her actions. Her face is a face full of assurance and imprisonment to her surroundings. Her face, more specifically her eyes, show that she thinks her only way to cope with these horrific surrounding is to grow up quickly.

Essential question 4: How do we form our beliefs and what influences them?
This graphic shows the value that hands can add to the development and idea of a story. Marjane's friend was just told that her father was tortured and killed in prison. Because our values are often build upon our experiences, her friend formed her belief against torturers because of the personal pain that they have caused her. Satrapi is very intentional with the placement of her friend's fist; putting it the very center of the graphic and having marjane's eyes directed towards it. The fist shows an exuberance of anger and frustration.

The children feel that they must punish Ramin for the actions of his father. They feel that they must do this because of the common sentiment of the culture to support aspects of life contrary to the shah. His dad was a member of the secret police so they felt compelled by the values of society to take action. This is an excellent example of balancing the demands and requirements of society with personal beliefs. The graphic weight of this graphic reveals what the popular opinion is against those associated with the shah
