Commodity classification uses the harmonized system. Each of the six digits within the Global Harmonized System of Nomenclature system code represents an HS chapter, heading, and subsection. In trade, the harmonized system enables countries to categorize commodities to fulfill customs regulations. Authorities also use a standard system code to monitor and export products through contract negotiations. this is the goal of the harmonized nomenclature system.

EDI has impacted the distribution process and the transportation of goods in a revolutionary way. EDI allows shippers and carriers to communicate simultaneously with orders, loads, BOLs, invoices, customs documents, and any other information needed in regards to the transportation of the freight. EDI allows for more freight to be sent and accepted in a quicker manner, without the need of freight being manually entered, which is a slower practice.

From the perspective of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), my last out of country holiday contributed to international trade because I was spending USD in an European economy. 1 EUR is equal to 1.13 USD, and the USD is an internationally recognized currency and is widely accepted. By spending USD abroad, I am contributing to the circulation of the USD internationally, opening the world to cross-border commerce and trade.

The purpose of the harmonized system of nomenclature is to internationally recognize freight. Goods are listed using a special 6 digit number which is internationally recognized, so no matter which border the freight goes to, it can be recognized and logged across the world. The HS system is made of a chapter, heading, and a subsection. It impacts international trade as it allows for the logging of inventory levels of a specific product, and can help with mapping out predictions of consumer demand.
