In the end I decided to do water color just because of the texture it can give off and that way watercolor mixes together. I wanted gray toned in the greens for the grass, the blues for the sky, and the browns for the actual earth. By doing this gave my piece that gloomy slow feeling I wanted. As well as the translucence of water color makes this scene more f a dream scape that has grown old and broken. When I looked through the grids for the ideas I wanted I chose the four squares that stood out to me. For the subject, I wanted to look at the human world. I felt for the last few projects I have done that I looked at the idealistic aspects of life and then characterized it.; a cityscape was perfect for it was simplistic but heavy in detail at the same time. Media was a much harder decision; I have done a variety of media. But I had tried to stay away from one, which was oil pastel. I decided this would a perfect opportunity for this project because I was doing something I have seen plenty of times and mixing it with something I never have done. For the last two parts which is technique and composition, I decided that a carefully rendered and define piece plus obscuring parts of my piece would be an interesting combo. The layering I had put in each part of the piece and the practicing an idea over and over until I got it right was just a drag. However, I did learn something; I learned that like color pencil, oil pastel is a very slow media to do. If an artist I limited on time and was using oil pastel, they should use a small sheet of paper or whatever they're using the oil one. I highly recommend that whoever does oil should have a smaller area of paper to work with and an extra sheet to practice using different layers of color. It didn't take me very long to figure out how to place them because when I was doodling different ways I can write those initials I made it sees like they were two pieces to a broken heart. But the pieces quite not fitting together for a heart can change in one direction with one part of it while the other can go a different direction. I added a few cleaner warped hearts, colored in some random shapes with modeling paste and covered a few more spots with more of the darker neutral tone paint I had created. However, on the "top" of the piece, I added another figure. Disfigured by color and seems to be broken, but have a content sad smile. I added this to balance out with the collaged morphed figure on the "bottom" of the piece. The two different figures both in a way resembling one another are the feeling of this chaotic peace, just clicked together. To finalize my piece I added two animals. A crow and a dog like an animal looking as if it's yelling. The crow represents an unknown path and bad luck, and ironically the black-ish color of the background seemed to fit with the crow. As for the dog like an animal just adding to the chaotic feeling to the piece. I found a piece of paper that had reds and yellows, blues and grays, and a cut-up picture of what seems to be grayish waters near some sort of land mass. Because of that it made the challenges I faced more bearable than my other projects I have done this year. The major challenge I had faced was that color and how it is affected in different lighting. Since each painting I was doing had a different cone to them one being more red while the other being more grey or red, it was difficult getting the appropriate shades for each. I was nervous to add a color I new was needed because I didn't want to mess up the shade of color or the painting itself. For other artists in the future who wish to use acrylic, don't be afraid to add and mix color. By only adding white or black won't always get that shade you want. I mixed colors together and got shades that i didn't even know I could get. Also to take your time with shading and layering of paints. I spent a whole 30 mins on just one tiny section of the three paintings just so I could get it that perfect shade I wanted.
