The southern colonial style house usually features grand entranceways, often with Greek style columns. Most are styled as large plantation mansions with many rooms, large living spaces, luxurious living, and multiple chimneys. The southern colonial style house came into style during the early colonial era to the ending period of the civil war. Most were built by wealthy plantation owners, rich from cash crops such as cotton or tobacco in the South. The abolishment of slavery and the economic effects of the civil war ended up making most of the south bankrupt, but some revival of plantation style houses have been attempted.
