Mary Mackillop was born in Victoria, Australia and grew up as the eldest of eight children and had a good education from her father. Her family was not very well off and often was homeless and had to rely on friends and family for housing. By the age of sixteen mary was working as a teacher to provide money for her family. Mary met father Julian Tenison Woods who wanted to help kids in the outback get an education and religious education but she could not help as her family relied on her income. In 1866 she opened the first St Joseph's school in a disused stable in penola, Victoria.

Matthew 25:35-45

Come you who God has blessed.....for I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you made me welcome; naked and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me.

Then the good people will say in reply: Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you; or thirsty and give you a drink? When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome; naked and clothe you; sick or in prison and go to see you?

This text could’ve inspired mary mackillop because her main value was to help people and she lived simple and never had any greedy possessions and put others before herself. Texts like these in the bible would’ve inspired mary to pursue her dreams and open up her own school in the name of St Joseph who also relied on the values of love, hope and kindness.

St Mary Mackillop often wrote about how she could feel the presence of god, and how comforting it is. In 1873, she wrote; “remember, He gave me such a sense of his watchful presence that I would feel myself reproved for my smallest faults.” This text is explaining her faith for got and how he is always there to forgive.

Rerum Novarum and its connection to Mary's work.

Rarum Novarum (of revolutionary change) Is an encyclical l issued by pope Leo XIII on the 15th may 1891. In the Rerum Novarum many social difficulties and world spread issues were raised mainly because of the industrial revolution. Pope Leo XIII touched on topics such as the relationships between employer and employee, distribution of wealth and working conditions. As evident in the Rerum Novarum, Leo was very caring and kind to everyone and cared more about the people than the money which is very different from the Church in his past which was associated with the rich and had no respect for the poor. Mary showed similar characteristics such as kindness for all especially to the poor and children as she helped the poor out by opening schools for families who can not afford to send their kids to school. She also opened places for the homeless and for women who have been abused and have nowhere to live

Mary Mackillop college is a school in Nundah, Brisbane that is carrying the faith of Mary and teaching young girls as an organisation. There is also other organisations and charities such as Caritas, Which provide to the homeless and needy selflessly like Mary Mackillop did. Caritas plans and strives to end poverty and Mary worked mainly with the poor. I believe that because of her selflessness and her story she has inspired many people to go out in the community and be selfless and do good.

How is St Mary Mackillop Priestly, Prophetic and Kingly?

Mary carries in the way of God and did everything in his name and for him. she showed that she was priestly, prophetic and kingly in many ways. She showed that she had values of a priest by showing others the true ways of God and showing courage for all. Mary showed and gave an example of her prophetic values and ways. Prophets are educators of God and Mary preached the word of god to everyone she taught and told everyone how amazing Jesus is. She showed kingly ways by showing persistence and not giving up and being honest and true to herself and others.
