I picked a piece of the closest nature I could see, some Rabbit Brush seeds pods and a Pine branch and cone. I usually take so much time to draw and have never taken on the Pine Cone in short time. Semi blind contour wins the day 2ith a recognizable cone. Thank you for the challenge. I noticed that there is no Pine smell in the branch at all. It's a very dense fog, bone-chilling cold day and I wasn't sure I could find anything in the almost dark end of day. I was amazed to find a few interesting signs of life. Daffodil shoots that started in mid December - early this year. A fuzzy star magnolia blossom. Purple Primrose flower bud. Rhododendron bud tightly and neatly fitted together. A mushroom growing on a wood door frame at a farm we visited. Turkey tail fungus on a stump. Life is happening all around us if we just stop, look slowly, closely and be curious! This event encouraged me so much to quickly get the item sketched on the page with a splash of color and not worry too much about the art. They are one of my favorite creatures to find on our local walks. My favorite fact about them is that they produce a slime that has an anesthetic effect...and will make a predator's mouth (or fingers) go numb!! They’ve been transported all around the world. They grow well and look stunning in warm climates, so their numbers have increased rapidly in tropical countries. It reminds me of our own human species transported world wide for all kinds of reasons. We have flourished against the odds to climate: by human invention & technology which has allowed us to defy nature & too many of us live naively or arrogantly almost anywhere around the planet. It s not political to draw parallels to our invasion in fragile environments and ultimately produce this climate crisis.
