Hello my friends! My name is Micheal the Molecule! Right now, I'm swimming freely as magma inside this wonderful volcano. It's quite nice here, but I'm looking for some change! Soon, I'll have to say goodbye to my friends; they'll stay here and become intrusive rock like gabbro and granite. That means they'll harden underneath the Earth's surface. Once I leave this volcano's lava, I'll become an extrusive rock. Maybe I will become obsidian or basalt! I like the idea of forming above the Earth's surface. I'm going to miss my buddies, but at least we'll both be igneous rock, a type of rock that forms from the cooling of molten rocks. I'll keep you updated!

I'm back my friends! It's been some time now. I left my volcano and I'm happily situated in my igneous rock. I wonder if my brothers and sisters from the volcano are okay. Up here, it's much different. The molecules at the surface of the rock are eroded and become sediment. Wind, rain, snow, and ice break them down, and they are deposited to new places. Then they are compacted and cemented together under their own weight to form new rock. I hope to be a clastic sedimentary rock like shale and sandstone. Clastic rocks are formed by weathering. Rumor has it that some of the molecules get turned into chemical rocks which means that they form from chemical reactions like gypsum and sylvite. Some sediment might become a part of an organic rock, which means that it contains a lot of material that was once alive. Coal and limestone are both organic sedimentary rocks. Oh wow! Looks like I'm being weathered away as we speak! See you at my next stop.

Greetings! Since we last spoke, I was washed into this trench deep underwater. Over time, I was compacted into this basalt. I don't like it as much as the igneous rock, so I'm trying my best to move. Hopefully, I'll be subducted into the Earth where I can become a metamorphic rock under intense heat and pressure. I could also become a foliated metamorphic rock like gneiss or slate, which are formed when directed pressure gives the rock a layered or banded appearance. Non-foliated rocks don't have any patterns. Marble and hornfels are good examples. Talk to you later!
