This artifact is a painting of Jesus Christ hanging on the cross. It is significant because the crucifix is a symbol and representation of the Catholic faith, which was one of the main reasons for European exploration. Early Christians believed that it was their duty as followers of Christ to spread the good word and convert as many people as possible to the Catholic faith. The faith of the explorers gave them the courage to embark on these journeys. They wanted to bring glory to themselves as well as to God.

When Spanish explorers first arrived to the New World, they stole valuable items from the indigenous people, or tricked them into giving luxury goods away cheaply; this included silver. They mined approximately thirty-five million pounds of the precious metal from mines all around the New World. By 1550, a place called Potosi yielded sixty percent of all the silver mined in the world. All this silver made Spain a very rich country in the 1600's. Historians often refer to that period of time as Spain's "golden age". This money also helped Spain finance more exploration.

Potatoes + Corn

This artifact shows two essential crops brought to Europe from the Americas because of exploration, corn and potatoes. Aspects of corn that made it so valuable include the crop's short growing season, high yield per unit of land, and its ability to thrive in climates too dry for rice and too wet for wheat. Later, corn became a staple in Spain, Portugal, Southern France, and Italy. In addition to the introduction of corn in Europe, the potato also gained popularity and eventually grew to become more valuable than corn to the Europeans. The nutritious root vegetable slowly spread from the west to the east, into countries such as Ireland, England, and France. Later in time, it also spread to Germany, Poland, Hungary, and Russia. Both vegetables shared one key aspect which they contributed to Europe, they both allowed for major population growth.

Caravels

This artifact is a picture of a caravel. The caravel was a small, light, three-mast sailing ship developed by the Portuguese. It was slightly slower than the galley which came before it, but much more sturdy and durable, which allowed it to handle dangerous voyages across rough waters. Unlike the earlier galleys, which were powered by slaves using oars, the caravel was propelled by the wind and had a sternpost rudder which made it much easier to maneuver. One other important characteristic of the caravel was that it held more cargo. This ship was very important because it allowed for longer voyages across the oceans which helped explorers make these risky trips. The ability to carry more cargo meant the explorers could bring more food and supplies with them. Finally, without the slaves on the ships, there was more room, allowing for more comfort.

This artifact is a painting of a compass. It was incredibly important because it enabled sailors to determine their direction and position while at sea. Without the use of present day technology, this device was a key component to sea exploration. If captains were correct through the use of the compass, it gave the crew more confidence in the captain's leadership. This confidence would have prevented a mutiny. Getting lost at sea could mean death. Without this device, exploration would have been much more difficult, taken significantly longer, and caused more death.
