The Watsons Go to Birmingham is a book that follows a black family on their trip to Birmingham, Alabama during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement. The Watson family lives in Flint, Michigan, a state in the North that is not segregated. In attempt to straighten up their teenage son Byron, the Watsons take a trip to Birmingham to visit their strict Grandma Sands. Momma and Dad feel that Byron will learn his lesson by being exposed to the real world, particularly segregation in the South. The family has new encounters and experiences on their trip and while in Birmingham. One of the most notable experiences for the family is when their little sister's church is bombed by a white supremacy group. The book explores the themes of family, friendship, and most importantly, civil rights.

The Little Rock Nine were the nine children who were known for being the first African American children to attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. After the passing of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, schools were required by law to desegregate. However, this school in Arkansas prevented the black children from entering safely. The article describes the Little Rock Nine's journey and provides insight as to the discrepancy between legislation and real life during the Civil Rights Movement.

Can Kids Change the World?

When Ayanna Najuma and her friends from Oklahoma take a trip to New York, they were amazed by what they saw. In the north, there was no segregation, meaning that whites and blacks were allowed to eat at the same restaurants, sit together on the bus, and drink from the same water fountains. This was a completely different way of life from what the children were used to. Upon arriving back to Oklahoma, the kids were determined to make a change. They engaged in trainings to help them learn how to conduct nonviolent protests, particularly sit-ins. They were persistent and continued to fight until places began to integrate in their towns. Even though they were young and little, their voices were big enough to make monumental changes.
