The main character, Janie Crawford who is a black woman, gets forced to marry an old farmer called Logan Killicks who only wants a domestic person to boss around with. Their relationship is abusive, and Janie reaves Logan and runs away with Joe Starks. He says that he wants her to receive inequality, but he only treats her as a trophy. Joe at last dies of old age and Janie finds a man called Tea Cake. They fall in love but then in the end Tea Cake dies.
