Colorblind ideology aims to the idea that all individuals should be treated equal regardless of their race. If you cannot see one's race you can't act on it based off previous opinions or judgements. A racially colorblind society is free from treated one legally and socially based off skin color. This is thought to be the best way to end racism by not seeing different skin colors and just seeing all as one.

This is an issue because it actively dismisses the racism that is still very prevalent today. Not believing in the fundamental racism that still exists in the country allows for almost no reforms to occur that are needed. The idea of color blindness isn't inherently bad, though. Not viewing others just based on race would be optimal, but since there is a lot of work that still needs to be done before the Race Neutral Ideology would actually be beneficial, not just to hide racism.

The idea of racial color blindness is that if we pretend like we don't see race, then it won't factor into our decisions, and bias won't occur. You are supposed to judge people on their character and focus on the commonalities between each other and not skin color. However, it is known that this is not something that will stop discrimination or heal racial wounds. A Psychology Today article says, “Colorblindness creates a society that denies their negative racial experiences, rejects their cultural heritage, and invalidates their unique perspectives”. This is true, this take on having a non-racist society is to just ignore all the past and present things surrounding race. But we know that the way to go about it is to recognize and understand rather than push it down. This is also just an impossible thing to do because, according to a Harvard article, people automatically perceive race within milliseconds and start at just 6 months old. Overall, colorblindness is not the answer to solving the problems within race. It in fact does the complete opposite of what it means to do.

Race neutral ideology believes that racial barriers no longer impact peoples opporunties when we don't lead with race, but this dismisses the lived experiences of discrimation indivuals have been through. This idea of colorblindness can make it harder to address systemic racism because it pushes away from "race" as a topic and believes everyone starts at the same place and goes through the same obstacles. However, this isn't the case as historically and structurally inequities in housing, education, and employment impact certain groups because of race.

Race neutrality is the idea that we all start from a level and equal playing field. We should not see race. This would be great if this was actually true. We do not start at the same place with the same structural advantages and disadvantages. Neutrality and equality are not interchangeable. Just because people have equal opportunities does not mean they have an equitable chance to achieve. The reason for this is that there are structural, historical advantages/disadvantages tied to a persons race.
