MEGAN BOWMAN
The smartboard thing is something new to me. The first time I ever even saw one was in block 1 when I was observing at Hailmann Elementary school. I think they are pretty cool. To me they seem like a combination of a tv, chalkboard, and an overhead projector, which is what I have always been used to in school. In the first video they were using the smartboard to practice reading. I liked the use of the smartboard because it was a way the whole class was able to participate and interact by getting out of their chairs and pressing a button on the smartboard. The second graders in the second video were using the smartboard to discuss their power writing. The teacher used the board as a tool to display a screen that the students could read off of. I actually really like the smartboard now that I have been introduced to it. I think there are many uses for it. Teachers can use it as a screen to display something they want to show the students such as a video or a PowerPoint. Teachers can also use it in a more interactive way. By having the students approach the board and working out problems such as math problems or correcting the sentences. I think having a smartboard is something of value because of its many different uses. Classrooms would no longer need a tv, or an overhead projector taking up space in their classroom when it can all be done from one board. I think the smartboards are a great way to keep students engaged in their learning, just like in the first video with the high frequency words. The teacher chose students to come up and pick a stop light and if their stop light had a word they had to pronounce that word. This activity kept the students engaged because of the risk that they would get “stopped” by the light that they chose. I think things like keep the lesson exciting. Overall there are many different ways of using the smartboard, and I can’t think of a negative thing that could come with it. I think they are pretty efficient and effective.

Kaylin VanderMeer
When I was in school smart boards where just being introduced so I did not get to do too many things on them. All the classrooms would have them but they were not used very often. I think apart of that is that the teachers did not know exactly how to use them because they were just so new. The little we did use them though I just remember being so much more intrigued in what was going on. I think that having a smart board and knowing how to use it in a classroom can help so much. It keeps the children so much more involved in what was going on and they enjoy the learning more. I loved the games that you could play on them that go right along with the lessons and the review games that the kids can make on their own so they are not only learning from playing the game but they are also learning while making the game. I also think that what the one teacher said in the third video was that the children get more involved and more excited to learn and will also retain what they learned because they are seeing it, hearing it, and moving it. I also loved to see the different ways that the children could count the days with the coins and tallies and things. The teacher could have done that before but it would have been so much harder because you can not see the coins and this way you can see the coins and move them and add them up all on the board. I think it was also very cool for the kids hand writing to change into the typed words. I think that, that is important because then everyone in the class can understand and read what they are writing and you can call on volunteers and not worry about some people not being able to read their hand writing. I can not wait to use a smart board in the class room I think they provide so many different opportunities for learning and teaching.

Jessica Fleming
I absolutely love smartboards! Now don't get me wrong when I started substituting, I totaly disliked them because i liked doing things the old school way like chalkboards hahaha but I started seeing what amazing things they could do. In the first video i like how the teacher kept the students interacted while calling them up to the board and finding words. Or white the stop light game, clicking on the picture and having to read the words. This would be of value to my class because there is more these smartboards can do. You can even put on the screen whatever paper you want to show. For example, when I substituted the teacher would leave lessons for the children to spell correct and all I had to do was lay it on under what looked like lamp and it would show on the smartboard! So much more convenient rather than having to write everything on the board. Or when students would come in in the morning, the teacher would have her lunch account on the screen and the students would move their name to the section if they were getting school lunch or lunch from home and it would be on the teachers computer and all she had to do way send it to the lunch lady! How neat is that? Classrooms would no longer need tv's, teachers can just use the internet and it will show on the smart board. I think these boards are a great way of keeping kids interacted, I have seen it. Kids love coming up to the board. The only bad things is they can be pricey for schools.

That is something that I would use in my class. I think that is such a great way to learn words! I also liked that the children were able to do games and puzzles to help facilitate what they are learning; they really loved the chance at actually using the smartboard. My favorite thing was how well the children used the smartboards and how excited and interested they were during the lesson. There seems to be so many different software available for use that I think I would try to use this as much as possible in class. The children get to be interactive in their learning and I can bring learning to them in new, fun, and creative ways. This will also allow me to let the children be more apart of their learning; I just love how interactive the smartboard is! I think this would be a definite plus to any classroom!

CLAIRE MILLER
When I was in junior high, my school changed over to smart boards. It was very exciting to go from dusty old chalk boards to fancy whiteboards. I remember that since they were new, the students didn't really get the opportunity to use them. They were only for the teachers. I went back to my school a few years later to cadet teach, and teachers had come up with new activities for the students to participate in with the smart boards. A lot of the activities were similar to the ones shown in the videos. I think that using smart boards is a wonderful idea. The third video talked about how they motivate students and keep them engaged because they are interactive. My classmates and I were more excited to learn with smartboards and we didn't even get to use them ourselves! I can't imagine how exciting it is for a student to be able to use smartboards now. There are so many options for learning games and activities to use with a smartboard too. The videos showed simple activities like changing the calendar or reading review. They also showed more complex activities like having the students create their own review games. The variety of ways you can use smartboards keeps children excited and interested and it also stretches their brains. The second video also made me think that smartboards are beneficial because all of the different activities are contained in one place. I remember doing the calendar activities with the money and the counting when I was in 1st Grade. Only we had a physical calendar holder with real coins that hung on the wall. We also had vocab review words that hung on the wall. Because smartboards hold all this information in one place, we as teachers will have more space and freedom to decorate our rooms with other helpful information. I'm thrilled at the idea of having a smartboard in my future classroom because of the way it enhances learning and motivates students1

Abby Payton
I love the idea of smartboards and I did not know all of the possibilities that could be possible to do with the smartboard. Since I'm studying Early Childhood, I really thought the second video was beneficial. The students were reviewing the calender, the months, and the weather. I also enjoyed how the teacher included math into the lesson plan. In the third video, the teacher says that she believes the smartboard is an interactive way of having her students being excited to learn and perform in front of their classmates. She says that she hopes that this way of learning is providing a better way for students to understand the material. I agree with this teacher, personally because I know that I would remember the material if the experiences I was having were fun and interactive. Children were very interested in learning and using the smartboard and they were excited for what was next! I also liked how the third video had many different videos and experiences put into one. This allowed us to see the different ways and lessons that we could use in our own classroom when using the smartboard! Some teachers even explained where they got the activity from which we can use as as resource

Joel Birky
I love the idea of smart boards and think that they can be extremely beneficial to us as teachers in our classroom. When using the smart board, it seams as if the possibilities are endless. There is so many interactive activities that you can use for each and every subject that you are teaching. The whole using chalkboards and white boards are becoming extinct and there is a lot less that you can do with those. In one of the videos, the kids were learning vocabulary words and had to touch one of the colors to make sure that they didn't receive a stop and then had to read the word. This made it more exciting for the kids because they wanted to make sure they weren't the one to get the stop. I think the smart board allows for the kids to stay more engaged in whats going on. It is also a lot of fun o come up and draw on the smart board. With all of technology today that children use on a daily basis, I believe that they can use the technology to learn better and more effectively because they are used to being on it. Smart boards are something that should be in every classroom and I hope that I have one in my classroom.

Mariola Mazur
Having a smartboard in my classroom when I become a teacher would be very beneficial. With a smartboard children are able to do and learn so much with them! Also, they're really fun for children to use! Children can practice another language on them like video number three showed us children learning Spanish. Also, video number two showed us how children can learn counting change by counting how many days they've been in school so far. There were many different ways to show how many days the children have been in school such as tallies, counting by numbers, etc. That was a great and easy way to teach the students that skill. Smartboards can get the class together as a whole. In my experiences with smartboards when I was in school was a positive one. I always remembered wanting to use it. The smartboard helped children with their behavior too because those that were on their best behavior got to play with it. So, I feel like a smartboard would be a great tool to have in my future classroom because they come with a lot of benefits.

Robert Tabor
Smartboards continue to be a huge asset to teachers in the classroom. I remember when I was in school, South Central was one of the first schools in my area to purchase smartboards for every classroom. I think it was a really wise investment. Seeing as its connected to your computer you could virtually access any software, program, or media content that can be viewed on a small scale by an individual, and allow for the entire class to experience it together, which introduces a new and exciting dynamic to teaching. When Smartboards first came out teachers were unfamiliar with them, but it didn't stop them from showing us interesting video clips, playing interactive learning games, and exploring our world with Google Earth. I can imagine that now, since there are so many programs tailored for Smartboards specifically, that there are far more ways to engage students in new and interesting ways to learn. A lot of what the videos covered was focused on group activities where students could either participate by word of mouth as the teacher interacted with the smartboard, or they could actually come up and interact with it themselves. Not only does this allow them to learn some technological skills useful to the learning of future skills, they are also getting a chance to engage more than one of their senses in the learning process. For example during the spanish lesson, they were able to hear the instructor say the word while pointing to the object it belonnged to and saying it themselves. The more senses and parts of the brain that are activated in the learning process, the better chance the child will have in remembering what they have learned. I'm excited and really think that a Smartboard will be useful in bringing the class together to learn and have fun, and maybe even enter into some friendly competition. It's in some of those more competitive atmospheres that important life lessons can be taught about cooperating with others and showing kindness even in the midst of adversity.

Kara Trent
The only experiences that I have had with smartboards are at PNW because I am from a small town with little to no money so we were not able to afford them, at least while I was still in school. As I have used them in college, I think that they could be very beneficial to students. It is a way to obtain more active engagement in the classroom as well as getting more attention from your class because it is more fun than normal book learning or worksheets. The videos gave examples of different activities you can do with the smartboards. One of the videos was about students learning Spanish. I just thought that was crazy that they were able to learn a whole new language just by using one. Another video showed a class counting the number of school days that they had left. I thought that it seemed like a lot of fun for them to use the smartboard in different ways to find out how many days they did have left. After reading more about them and actually using them now in college, I can't wait to use them if I get one in my future classroom!

I went to a New Tech high school and we had these in almost all of our classrooms. I liked them because they got everyone involved. Many of the exercises that were done were games and the class would split into sections and answer the questions. I think it would interest the kids more because this generation in so into technology it wouldn’t bore them. From the videos I really liked how in the first video a students were very eager to get up to touch the stoplights and say the word. They would all laugh to the student who got the police officer. I think it’s a good way for students to start to become involved at an early age and to collaborate with their classmates.

Some of the games students played as a class I have had my cousin play by himself while tutoring him in math and reading. It was cool to see the whole class work together on some things and individually on others. I think smart boards are extremely useful in the classroom, like a few of the teachers said it allows students to use multiple intelligences at a time, which in turn allows students to remember things more easily than just reading or hearing. In the first video the teacher worked on their morning work talking about calendars and numbers of days in school. The way she made that a lesson in math was great. In a few of the other videos you could hear students getting excited as their classmate got the correct answer, even helping them when needed, this is really cool because the use of the smart board is not only helping their learning, but also their class community.

When I first saw it I couldn't believe that they had one in a kindergarten classroom I thought it was so cool! I got to watch the students interact with the smart board when they got done with their assignments early or during their play time in the morning before class starts. I love how the children can interact with the board and play games that are educational but still fun. I feel that a smart board in a class room would be very beneficial. I think smart boards are a great resource to have in the classroom. You get to project certain things on the board that the students are learning about or you can play a simple math addition and have the students click on the correct answer. I feel that middle students would enjoy this more than kindergartners because these days middle students are very techy and love anything that involves technology. Overall I cant wait to work with a smart board in my future classroom.

I would enjoy having a smart board in my classroom. I came in contact with the smart board during my first observation of a Hammond school. I found that children were more engaged and willing to learn from the smart board vs. a chalk board. Like the first video, It allows students to be more active and have fun while learning. I enjoy that children are able to interact with the board and with the classmates. There are also so many great uses for the white board. It allows the teacher to demonstrate and give directions faster than writing on a chalkboard. I can not wait to work with these in my classroom!

Smart board are great in many aspects of teaching but in my classroom, I hope to at least spend some time in the actual book and do other hands on activities. When I first used a smart board it was in a child development class in high school which also was a three day preschool type thing "I did a project that involved me creating my own farmer on the dell book I made it interactive with sounds and pictures. I think the kids loved it and I am looking forward to doing some interactive stories and games in my class. I really like how the games in the fist video were interactive and colorful . The math game in the third video is defiantly something I want to look into.
