Types of animal cruelty

“Life is life – whether it is a cat or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man’s own advantage.” – Sri Aurobindo. All animals on Earth have the right to live happily without any fear and pain. Animals also feel pain and cry as humans do, but they cannot express their grief. There are basically two types of animal cruelty and which can be categorized as active and passive form, unintentionally cruelty results from neglect of animals. However, herewith were the most common types of animal cruelty.

The first most common type of animal cruelty is slaughterhouse cruelty. This is the most form of cruelty observed in day-to-day. According to ‘Mercy For Animals’ activists, cruel treatment were given to chickens and turkeys by one of the animal welfare organization. When they’ve grown large enough to slaughter or their bodies have been worn out from producing milk or eggs, animals raised for food are crowded onto trucks and transported for miles through all weather extremes, typically without food or water. At the slaughterhouse, those who survived the transport will have their throats slit, often while they’re still conscious. Many remain conscious when they’re plunged into the scalding-hot water of the defeathering or hair-removal tanks or while their bodies are being skinned or hacked apart.

Moving on to the next most common type of animal cruelty which is animal testing cruelty. Animals subjected to harmful chemicals which affect their health adversely. Mostly done on laboratory experiments – over 100 million animals, including dogs, rabbits, rats, cats, monkeys, birds, among others are killed for drug, chemical, food and cosmetics testing every year. For example, albino rabbits tested for chemicals that cause eye irritation. The liquid form of such chemicals are dropped into the eyes of rabbits and they are left for 2 to 3 days in that particular condition. There are many such examples of cruel acts that throws light on the ugly side of animal testing. Animals are forced to consume and inhale harmful chemicals. Along with above mentioned practices, animals are caged, shocked or in worst cases, starved to death.

Last but not least, another type of common cruelty done to animals were the genetic manipulation. This were done by manipulation of animal genome through biotechnology to increase productivity and fast-forward growth. This has increased significantly and it badly impacts the overall health of animals. Most factory-farmed animals have been genetically manipulated to grow larger or to produce more milk or eggs than they naturally would. Some chickens grow so unnaturally large that their legs cannot support their outsized bodies. Approximately 90% of broiler chickens have trouble with walking due to their genetic manipulation. This exposed them to suffer from starvation or dehydration as they cannot walk to reach food and water.

As a conclusion, we as human beings that were gifted with ability to think, we are the one that should stand up for animals, not abusing them! We often heard about animal cruelty lately but after expressing our ‘ephemeral anguish’, we tend to forget them. Unconsciously, we are one selfish living thing on earth. We act as if we care, but we do not actually. If we do care, what do we do for them? According to the Veterinary Services Department, the number of cases involving animal abuse increased by 10 per cent in the past year. Bernama reported that the statistics showed 463 cases recorded in 2016, while there were 510 cases in 2017. Does this not enough to proof our ignorance yet? Let us just stop this foolish act and start to really care. After all, animals gave us love and why do we return cruelty to them? Think.

Reference:

1. Genetic Manipulation, Religious Sacrifices And Worse: 8 Types of Horrific Animal Cruelty by Sugandha Varshney (https://www.youthkiawaaz.com/2015/10/saving-animals-from-cruelty/)

2. Animal Abuse On The Rise in Malaysia, Statistics Show by Malay Mail (https://www.malaymail.com/s/1666323/animal-abuse-on-the-rise-in-malaysia-statistics-show)
