In the past ten years, the “gig economy” has become an increasingly important segment of the labour market. Under-30s are more likely to engage in freelance, contracted or zero-hour work arrangements instead of traditional full-time jobs. Research on the reasons for and consequences of this shift has focused on objective measures of income, working hours and employment conditions, but there has been little work exploring young people’s subjective experiences of the gig economy.

In the literature on the gig economy, these new forms of employment are sometimes characterized as a flexible active choice and sometimes as an exploitative last resort. To gain a fuller understanding of why young people engage in the gig economy, in-depth qualitative research is required. Focusing on workers’ experiences can help develop more robust theories of flexibility and precarity in contemporary employment, as well as potentially informing future policy objectives.

This study aims to better understand young people’s experiences in the gig economy. A mini survey will be used to gain better insight into the motivations and perceptions of under-30s engaged in freelance and zero-hour work across various industries. This data will be contextualized with a review of recent literature on the gig economy and demographic changes in the workforce.

Cyberbullying

Bullying is a social problem that continues to hound Malaysia’s teenagers, reported a Malaysian media. However, just as the number of social media users have increased over the years – so too has cyber harassment. Cyberbullying is more rampant now as it can be carried out anonymously without the bullies having to face any real consequences. This could drive victims into depression, anxiety and even to suicide. Back in May, a 20-year-old Malaysian woman was believed to have committed suicide after a TikTok video of her and a colleague became the subject of ridicule on social media.

Although the Pew Research Center classifies Malaysia as one of the world’s most morally conservative countries – Malaysians can be ruthless online. A 2018 research by tech review site comparitech.com placed Malaysia in sixth spot among 28 countries in a survey to measure cyberbullying. The ASEAN member state ranked second in Asia.

Based on a 2019 poll by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on violence against children in 30 countries, one in five young people were reported to have skipped school due to cyberbullying and violence. Whereas in Malaysia, it was reported that three in 10 young people are victims of cyberbullying.

A study conducted by market research firm IPSOS titled, ‘Malaysian and Global Views on Bullying’ found that awareness of cyberbullying is increasing globally, up nine percentage points in 2018 from 2011. The research which was conducted in 28 countries with more than 20,000 interviews revealed that one in four Malaysian parents said that their child had experienced cyberbullying. Although global awareness of the issue is high, a quarter of surveyed adults have still never heard of online bullying.

Abortion of babies is increasingly happening in our society whether the baby is thrown into the river, rubbish bins, or even hung at the gates of the mosque. This indirectly shows that the morale of our society is getting lower.

The cause of infant abandonment is peer influence. This is because teenagers are easily influenced by the actions of their peers and will follow whatever their peers do. Adolescents who are not mature -minded cannot tell whether their partner's actions are right or wrong.

In addition, adolescents who lack religious education and moral values are also one of the causes of infant abandonment. Many teenagers today lack religious education because they do not realize the importance of religious knowledge in one's life. Adolescents who are less religiously educated are indeed prone to make mistakes such as discarding a newborn baby.

Next, adolescents who lack love and attention from family are also identified as among other causes of infant abandonment problems. The busyness of working parents, broken families due to parental divorce, parental quarrels and the large number of siblings cause teenagers to try to find a way out to get love, attention and peace of mind from others as well as freedom of life.

In fact, the influence of the mass media is also a contributor to the problem of infant abandonment. Adolescents who browse pornographic websites or pornographic videos at home during the absence of parents at home cause their thoughts more to unhealthy things. As a result, the morale of these young people who are still groping in search of their identity is damaged.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

- Recently, we were shaken with the '🤬 jokes told by a teacher' issues, where the teacher was telling the boys that to consider 🤬 an adult women instead of underage girls just because the capital fine would be lighter. It is no surprise that in this millennial era, people think that 🤬 jokes is funny especially the one made up by men. The social construct and pressure have sadly made 🤬 jokes and sexual harassment as 'normal'. It is really sad how people think that someone's sufferings as funny and laughable.

- In Malaysia and in most part of the world, we can see how male is being dominant and was given more privilege in all sorts of way. Starting from chance of having a job to holding the ministry work. We can clearly see how the world treat people differently based on gender. Feminism exist because the world recognise the issue on how male were considered the supreme being. There is no such thing as Masculinist, because men are born with privilege.

- Hence that, most sexual harassment was made by men. It is undeniable that men can also be possibly sexual harassed but the women have been dealing with it the most frequent. It is said that in Malaysia itself the statistic have shown that everyday, almost 40 women got sexually harassed by men. It is also sad to see how a 🤬 victim were told "shameless" for standing up against the rapist. Such mentality should be banished by the society.

- Other than that, Ive been spectating how a lot of women were accused for wearing too tight and were "asking for it", instead of accusing the rapist as the one at fault. Whatever they wear were never meant to ask to be sexually harassed. Some would also relate this with their religion and use it against the victim. They ignore the main problem was the rapist itself. Are they trying to defend a rapist? The rapist is the one who are not able to control himself.

-The society would also about how the victim's clothing is too flashy and tight. It was as if these people never seen on social media that even a girl wearing either hijab and juba still got sexually harass. Whose fault it is actually? It is the one who is being offensive and look at all females as sexual toys. Most of these men can be publicly seen in the social media, openly sexually comment on these female post. Do they have no shame? All of this happen because of the social construct and the norms created by society to think that such behaviour is acceptable.

- In this data collecting activity I would want to see how the society look at the sexual harassment issue and wether it should be taken lightly or not. I wanted to see what was the best method the society would think to prevent or move against the sexual harassment. I also wanted to study on how the society plan to deconstruct sexual jokes as 'normal'.

UNEMPLOYMENT AMONG FRESH GRADUATE

👤Recently, Malaysian people have been taught facing on the issue of high unemployment rates among the local graduates.
The main problem ability of the unemployment among Malaysia graduates is the lack of skills and experiences.
👤Nowadays a lot of theoretical subject has been taught without implementing the practical sides and without skills you have nothing to apply to solve problem efficiently. Then, they are lacking of English command skill and poor communication skills that make them difficult to get a job. Next, the courses that they are took was not suitable and relevant to the industry. Thus, it is hard for them to get appropriate job in the market.
👤Secondly, another problem of unemployment is Malaysia’s Graduates demand too much on salary at the unreasonable. They want the salary more than what they are deserve. Besides, they want a job location nearer to their house because it will easy for them to commute from their house to the work place plus, they can save on the transport fees. Thus, employer are expecting graduates who with experiences from different areas.
👤Next, employer does not believe in fresh graduate’s ability because most of them have no experiences. the employer nowadays requires graduates to have some work experiences in order to qualified requirements.

HOW CAN SOCIAL MEDIA BE DANGEROUS FOR UNDERAGE KIDS?

Social media is a catch-all term used to describe the digital platforms, websites or apps that people use to connect to one another, and to create and share content.

If you’re a parent of tweens or teens, your kids are probably using (or want to be using) social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, Tumblr, YouTube, Snapchat. It’s important to remember these apps all have suggested age limits and aren’t always suitable for younger children. For example, Instagram requires all users to be at least 13 years old. Teens’ and tweens’ brains develop rapidly, so it’s important for parents to understand the impact – good and bad – that social media networking sites may have.Certainly speaking indirectly creates a barrier to clear communication, but that’s not all. Learning how to make friends is a major part of growing up, and friendship requires a certain amount of risk-taking. This is true for making a new friend, but it’s also true for maintaining friendships. When there are problems that need to be faced—big ones or small ones—it takes courage to be honest about your feelings and then hear what the other person has to say. Learning to effectively cross these bridges is part of what makes friendship fun and exciting, and also scary.

The appeal of social media

If you haven’t grown up with social media, the attraction to some of the platforms can be a bit baffling. But for young people, all that scrolling, liking, following and selfie-taking is sometimes the main way they connect with their friends and broader social circle, and keep up-to-date with what’s happening.

How to recognise when kids have a problem with social media

When young people have their eyes glued to their phones, computers or tablets, it can be hard for parents to know if they’re innocently absorbed or if something is wrong.Clinical psychologist Nikita Singh says one of the major signs that indicate young people are struggling with the impact of these platforms is when parents ask their children to separate from their screens and it turns into conflict or misbehaviour. “If you find yourself having to snatch their phone or asking them to put it away and they storm off, that’s an indicator there’s an issue,” Nikita says.

Marine conservation, also known as marine resources conservation, is the protection and preservation of ecosystems in oceans and seas. Marine conservation focuses on limiting human-caused damage to marine ecosystems, and on restoring damaged marine ecosystems.

Human impact
Increasing human populations have resulted in increased human impact on ecosystems. Human activities have resulted in an increased extinction rate of species which has caused a major decrease in the biological diversity of plants and animals in our environment. These impacts include increased pressure from fisheries including reef degradation and overfishing as well as pressure from the tourism industry which has increased over the past few years. Oil spills also impact marine environments, contributing to marine pollution as a result of human activity. The effects of oil on marine fish have been studied following major spills in the United States.

Overfishing

Overfishing is one of the main causes of the decrease in the ocean’s wildlife population over the past years. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation reported that the percentage of the world's fish stocks that are at biologically sustainable levels has decreased from 90% in 1974 to 65.8% in 2017. The overfishing of these large fisheries destroys the marine environment and threatens the livelihood of billions who depend on fish as protein or as a source of income for catching and selling.

The aim of the study is to protect and restore the biodiversity within the ecosystems of an area. Some of the examples include most national marine sanctuaries and national wildlife refuges.
